About the W-Body Page
What is the W-Body Page?
This web page is a collection of information I've collected about W-body cars
over the years. When my friend introduced me to the World Wide Web during the
fall of 1995, I learned how to code HTML. I had no idea what kind of web page
I wanted to publish for all to see. I decided to make a web page about what
interests me most. So The W-Body Page was born, November 1995.
What is a W-body
car?
General Motors classifies cars as different body
types. Cars of the same body type are built on the same platform, utilizing
the same unibody frame and most drivetrain components. W-body cars are front-wheel
drive midsize cars first introduced in 1987 as a 1988 model year. They were
GM's answer to the then radical and sleek-designed 1986 Ford Taurus and Mercury
Sable twins. W-body cars started out as sleek, aerodynamic 2-door coupes, and
4-door body styles were added in 1990. The first generation of W-body cars are
the 1988-96 Buick Regal, 1990-94 Chevrolet Lumina, 1988-97 Oldsmobile Cutlass
Supreme, and 1988-96 Pontiac Grand Prix. They were later to be replaced by the
second generation W-body cars, which are a total ground-up redesign. They consist
of the 1997+ Buick Century/Regal, 1997+ Pontiac Grand Prix, 1998+ Oldsmobile
Intrigue, and 2000+ Chevrolet Monte Carlo and Impala. There were also modified
versions of the first-generation W-body cars such as the 1995-99 Chevrolet Lumina
and Monte Carlo. I call those generation 1.5.

Why a W-body page?
This page exists because I love my
1989 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme International. It has everything I look
for in a car: aerodynamics, sporty looks, high-tech digital displays with cool
bargraphs, reliability, good handling, etc. It has 169,000 miles and has it
ever been in a shop (except for the annual inspection). I absolutely love my
Olds (as much as a car can be loved), it has made me a true W-body enthusiast.
I love the body style and appearance of my Olds so much, I went and bought myself
another W-body car, a limited edition 1990
Pontiac Grand Prix Turbo built by ASC/McLaren for Pontiac.
My
'89 Olds, I've had it since March 1994.

My
'90 Turbo Grand Prix, I've had it since August 1999.

I've searched the web, and even to
this date, W-body performance parts are hard to find. There are only a very
few true diehard W-body enthusiasts like myself. I'll face the facts, I'm
a weird guy. I love W-body cars, especially the first generation
coupes. I would not trade my W-body cars for the fastest Camaro, Firebird,
or Mustang in the world. In fact, I don't really care for true sports cars
at all. I don't care for small cars like Fiero's, Honda Civics, CRX's, VW's,
DSM (Eclipse/Talon), or even GM's own J-body or whatever cars. I don't care
for the plain looks and spartan interiors of midsize Japanese cars like
Accords or Camry's. I don't even care for luxury cars like Acura's, BMW's,
Lexus, Infiniti, or Mercedes. I don't care for SUV's or off-road utility
vehicles. Basically, I have no interest at all in the "cool" cars
that a guy my age normally daydreams about. These cars (especially the first
gen W-body) are getting older and not worth that much monetarily, but I
still love them more than rich people love their handcrafted Bentley's.
This site has grown out of my obsession for these cars! I'm sure you're
not as obsessed about these cars as I am, but hopefully some of the information
I provide on this site will help you enjoy your car more.
Why an all-inclusive
W-body site?
Although I
only own an '89 Olds Cutlass Supreme and a '90 Pontiac Grand Prix, I really
didn't see the point of restricting my site to just Cutlass Supremes and
Grand Prix. All W-body cars share the same platform. With the possible
exception of the larger body parts, parts from one will work in the other.
In fact, many body parts are even shared. So if performance parts and upgrades
will work on Grand Prix, it'll likely work on a Cutlass Supreme, Regal,
and Lumina as well. I don't limit the site to just one type of engine, because
I'm interested in the cars themselves, not just the engine. These
cars had many different available engines, and I consider the engine a replaceable
and upgradeable component. Besides, I'm not just interested in Cutlass Supremes
and Grand Prix's even though they are the only cars I own. If I had a big
place in the country with lots of room, I'd also buy my other favorite W-body
cars: 1) 1990-92 Buick Regal GS 2-door in black, with factory blacked out
grille & trim, a single red stripe, digital dash, and 3800 Series I
engine. 2) 1991-94 Chevy Lumina Z34, bright red with 3.4L DOHC V6 and 5-speed
transaxle.
Who
is this crazy W-body lovin' fool anyway?
