Getrag 284 history question

a thread about the Maserati TC came up on the TD forum and apparantly they were available with the Getrag 284 if the car was ordered with the Maserati 16 valve 2.2 DOHC Intercooled Turbo engine. someone on the forum mentioned that the 284 was designed for the 'failed mid-engined Corvette'...is this true?

were any other cars available with the Getrag 284? i know the 284 in the TC must have a different bellhousing and/or mounts but is it the same transmission otherwise?

We've talked about this briefly on the 660 board, but it's not a viable alternative for parts. They are just as expensive from chrysler, also note in the link above that only 501 5 speeds were made.

That was an interesting read. I never knew the real story behind the TC. All I ever heard about it was that they started with a Chrysler LeBaron convertible, tossed on an "Italian-Designed" front clip, and charged ten grand more than a regular LeBaron convert...

the TC actually has nothing to do with the Lebaron at all, even tho it looks very similar. it's a completely different design.

Didn't the LeBaron coupe and convert share a platform with the Daytona? I know all of the 80's Chryslers had K-Car derived platforms, but wasn't the one used by the Daytona and LeBaron unique to those 2 cars? If that's the case, then there's one similarity between the TC and the LeBaron.

I can remember when I was in High School, a buddy of mine had an uncle who almost bought a new TC. He ended up taking both a TC and a LeBaron out for a test drive and didn't think the TC was worth the ten grand premium over the LeBaron. He said they were "the same damn car." So that's where I got my second hand information. TC's were fairly rare in these parts to begin with, so maybe he should have bought one just to hold on to!

nope none. the TC was made in Italy.

it's a two seater, unlike the Lebaron.

I've spotted one TC here in Georgia so far in person, I've seen several over the past few years pop up in the local autotrader as well.
