tloftus
Hey guys, Just looking for an opinion. I've got an 89 Cutlass with the 3.1L V6. 3 times now the car has not started when the temperature (outside) has been 90+ degrees. I pulled a couple of wires last time this happened and there was no spark at all (from different coil packs). Let it cool down (overnight) the next morning it starts fine. I'm going on the assumption that my ignition module has an intermintent heat related issue but have no way of testing for sure. Has anyone seen this? Would you assume it's the module and just replace it ($80, no biggie, right?) or go for the crankshaft position sensor? Just wondering if anyone has experienced anything like this -- if not I'll just replace the module and hope for the best! Thanks! Manny
Before you sink $80.00 into a new ICM, take it to Autozone or Murray's, they will test it for free and tell you if its bad or not.
tloftus
I can test it myself, I have all the specs, the problem is that it's intermintent. I left it in the hot garage all day. If it fails when I get home I'll pop it out and take the readings. If it still starts up I think I'll just replace it anyway, 100,000 miles and 15 years, it may be about time. Thanks for the suggestion. Tom

tloftus
Well I tried starting it when I got home - nothing. Swapped the ignition module - nothing. Swapped the CPS - started! I'm not 100% sure it's fixed, we'll have to give it some time to see if it starts, I brought it to work today so hopefully I'll be able to go home at 4:30. If anyone needs an ignition module, I'm pretty sure I got a good working one here. T
