THe_DeTAiL3R Posted August 4, 2004 Report Posted August 4, 2004 I'm pretty sure that my waterpump is the problem.. (95 GP 3100) When the car is at full operating temperature it "sprays" coolant, and it appears to be spraying from the waterpump, below and above it where the belt is flinging coolant. Anyways the car does not overheat but rapidly looses coolant due to this problem. Now I'm wondering do I need to change the waterpump, or does it have like a bad gasket/seal on the engine? Could I get some of that "gasket-in-a-tube" stuff would that maybe work or new pump... ? Quote
digitaloutsider Posted August 4, 2004 Report Posted August 4, 2004 Same thing happend on our 3400. Pump needs to be replaced. Quote
Goph Posted August 4, 2004 Report Posted August 4, 2004 I had the exact same problem with my car about 2 weeks after a engine swap. it is the water pump and it need to be replaced. Quote

GPdriver1986 Posted August 4, 2004 Report Posted August 4, 2004 Change the pump. Exactly what my '90 did when I first got it. Take it off the '88! I would suggest you not to do that unless the waterpump is brand new on the 88. A new waterpump for a GM car costs below 50$ and it will be more reliable than having an old one. Quote

I've bought em for $30. But C-BAD likes to save money. Quote
GnatGoSplat Posted August 4, 2004 Report Posted August 4, 2004 $50? $30? The water pump on the 3100 is the same as the 3.1L, isn't it? I was pretty sure it was. I've never paid more than $16 for one. This is definitely a bad water pump. I've replaced one on the 89 and 88. Use a little RTV on the cardboard gasket that comes with it, and for best results let it cure overnight. You should be A-OK. I can't imagine someone messing up a water pump install on these cars. Quote

All GM 60 degree V6's have the same water pump, IIRC. Quote
THe_DeTAiL3R Posted August 5, 2004 Author Report Posted August 5, 2004 Same water pump.. cheap .. that is good news. I will get a new one. EDIT: I checked napa's website and the 1988 2.8 WP is the same part number as 1995 3100.. and they are damn cheap. Quote
