Canada
Now that the Grand Prix is running, its time to take after some of this normal maintance stuff. GM recommends Snyrchomesh (what exactly does that stuff consist off?)........other companies like Redline say that there stuff will work in its place. What has everyone else here used? Dan94Z34
put in syncromesh. DONT put anything else in it, unless you want to replace the transmission. The stuff is expensive, about $10 a quart, and the tranny takes 2 quarts I believe.
THe_DeTAiL3R
Before I had lots of questions about manual trannys so I asked over at 60*.com and most of them said Synrchomesh is the stuff to get... so when I eventually get a GM car with a manual I will use it most likely.. Canada
GM list is $9.91 (12345349).......however beings that I work for a dealership, I get stuff cheap (cost plus 10%). Supposedly Synchromesh is synthetic....anyone know if there is any truth to that? Quaker State supposedly makes a replacement... http://www.pzlqs.com/Tech/Pdsheet/QuakerState/Gear&Transmission/pdf/SynchromeshFluid.PDF
Dan94Z34
I have a 1/2 of a bottle of it sitting in my garage. It says that it is a semi-synthic oil on the bottle.
BIGBULS
Redline MTL is supposedly a good substitute. I'd check and see exactly what Redline has to say about that though.......... And yes, Synchromesh is a semi synthetic (as is MTL).
brian89gp
I pay $8.00 over the counter at the dealer for it... The redline stuff is slightly thicker. I've treid the Penzoil 'syncromesh' and it worked, but not incredibly well. The shifter was heavy (Getrag 284) when warm and damn near impossible when cold. I also tried adding 25% and 50% 90W gear oil to GM syncromesh to cure the 284 rattle but all I got was a stiff shifter. I'd just use the plain ole expensive GM syncromesh. Its good enough that other manual car owners (ie, non GM) are considering the GM stuff an upgrade.
Canada
Syncrhomesh it is.
5speedz34
GM synchromesh is the only way to go I wouldn't ever use ne thing else!
Canada
Friends of mine has switched to Redline's products in their transmissions.......so I've heard nothing but good things about them. Granted, none of those cars are built by GM or do any of them have a Getrag transmission.

god910
I can't speak so much for the 284, but the 282 will act just plain CRAZY if you don't put the right fluid in, as Kenny . I'd use GM Synchromesh, as I don't have experience w/ anything else.
Guest Gp crazy
talk about 282 mt. the gm stuff is the only way to go i broke the trans in my gp when i used 90 w castrol syn. i broke a bearing it made a loud sound at idle clutch off but clutch on no sound at all so i thought it was ok. but i found out other wise . the bearing seized on shaft and then no go. found another tranny for 300.00 bills tranny + shipping. the guy said that it one of a kind. so i felt lucky to find one in 1996 so use the gm stuff all the time! Baddflash
The syncromesh is specifically designed not to destroy linings and coatings inside the getrags, which other fluids may not. This is how it was explained to me. Plus is it really worth $5 when you could kill your tranny and cost $$$$$
TGPilot
GM synchromesh is all you want to ever put in a 284 or 282. It is a semi-synthetic GEAR oil with parafin wax additive. The wax helps to dissipate the heat and help the synchros to slow down for the next higher gear shift. Put something lighter than synchromesh in and you will grind your 1-2, 2-3, 3-4, 4-5 shifts because the synchros are not slowing down allowing the gears to mesh properly... 8)
Canada
I used Synchromesh.......cost really wasn't the factor........I was looking to see if there was anything better.......apparently there isn't.
TGPilot
I have heard of guys putting Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lube in the Getrag trannies...but it is too thin and causes gear change scratches from time to time. Thing I loved about the Synchromesh is how nice the tranny shifts and feels (less vibration feeling). Plus in cold weather it is not hard to get a gear on your first shift in the morning! Had an older Muncie Rock Crusher tranny that we put regular gear lube in (was young and stupid then) and tried to put it in gear on a 20*F morning...felt like I was going to bust the tranny!!
