THe_DeTAiL3R
Ok my fuel pump has been making a whining noise lately. Today I changed the 4+ year old fuel filter which has made it quite a bit quieter, however still loud compared to our other vehicles. Since it is quieter now with the new fuel filter, should I change the pump right now (I got a new pump from Davis), or can it wait? I have a full tank of gas BTW, so I woun't be changing it myself right now. If the tank was almost empty I'd maybe consider the task, however I think the fuel lines may be in need of replacement also.
Guest TurboSedan
i'd change it now before it dies completely leaving you stranded somewhere.
conley3.1
I'm pretty sure i'll be doing the same thing here pretty quick. Davis, you said you had some tips? Please?
DiscoStudd
I'd say change it soon because Murphy's Law states that it will fail at the gas station right after you filled your tank...
THe_DeTAiL3R
I think I will drive it till the tank is almost empty, then change it myself. I got the pump from Davis and bought a new fuel pump strainer thing today so I'm set to go... I was thinking- since the gastank was replaced only a few months ago, the fuel lines MUST be okay and I shouldn't have trouble with anything, which is what I was concerned with. This makes sense right?
Guest TurboSedan
you should be OK. i've done it twice now and it's not a hard job...well ok the first time was hell (learning curve + full tank) but the 2nd time was a breeze. i've noticed some W-bodies have flare fittings and some W-bodies have the quick-diconnect fittings. mine had the flare fittings but most W's i've seen in the j/y have the quick-disconnect. good luck
GnatGoSplat
Heh, when my tank goes below half, the fuel pump howls like a coyote. It's been doing that for the past 10yrs!
Guest TurboSedan
mine does too. the new TGP pump i put in is even louder. when the tank is almost empty it REALLY howls...which is probably a good thing considering my gas gauge doesn't work. THe_DeTAiL3R
My friend's Sunbird sounds exactly the same as my car (if not a bit louder). He drives the piss out of that little car and it hasn't died yet. Since I changed the f-filter it really is much quieter. To actually hear the noise from inside the car, you have to have the windows closed and the stereo off. Its really not that loud anymore. I think I will keep my new pump in the trunk for when/if it does fail, or until I feel like/have the time to take down the tank. That way if I get stranded the garage can put in MY pump and just charge for labor....
