R Dubya
I have my TGP engine down to the block and a few wires looms still attached.. ABS still in the bay, and I don't particularly want to remove the tranny with the engine so I don't have to remove that mc again. I'm looking for advice on removal. I assume it is possible to remove just the block after separation from the tranny, but I have the engine down to the bare block and starter, and I don't know where to attach the chains on the block and then to the picker when I get to do this next week. Anyone give me pointers on the best way to remove? Is it a pain to detach it from the tranny? Would I be better off taking the combo out? Thanks. god910
Well as far as the tranny goes, I'd do it w/o unless you plan on doing something w/ it while it's out. But you're gonna have to support the tranny. Why not bolt the heads back on (just 4 outer bolts) for the engine hoist points. I'd say just stick a bolt in the block through a chain link, but then it'd probably break and you'd be pissed :x.
R Dubya
how about i just wrap that thing with chains and pull it out that way? i'd be pissed if it damaged the heads with all that weight on it.. are those mounts meant to hold that weight? supporting the tranny wont be a big deal, I can wrap chains on that and hang it from the garage ceiling or use the picker when i get the block out. I've never done this before want to be safe as possible, dont want to drop that thing on the nose when it comes out.
god910
Complements to Veggie for the pic (Hope ya don't mind ) So if that doesn't answer your question I don't know what does Those are the mounts I use, no problems. I'd put the heads back on (4 outer bolts) and use the mounts. Shouldn't cause a problem. Good luck.

SleeperRed90TGp
Just put short head bolt in top center holes on each side. It won't bend them and won't hurt the block and will be pretty well balanced actually far better than using the stock lifting lugs. Jacking the tranny up a little helps the front mount break free. Let us know how you do. Jud
1badtgp
When I pulled the engine/trans out of the TGP I yanked it out of the top and the only thing I took off was the turbo. It's gravy. Although I think I would take the trans out with the engine for ease of assembly purposes.
R Dubya
Can he combo be done with the mc in? I have most of the engine disassembled right now.. I have a helper so it's not just one pair of hands, but I will be putting it back together. You mean the holes in the block with or without heads?
