runt
I'm sure that you could find a new EGR valve at an AutoZone or something and just do the work yourself. Over $300 is a LOT crazy for that kind of work.
5speedz34
EGR's are expensive shit, if I were you take it off clean it up cuz they get filled with carbon and get some new gaskets and then think about replacing it if its still giving you a light. SigEpCutlass
try pep boys or napa mike. I know for a fact that the Pep Boys on the Boulevard and Adams Ave is good. I had them replace my alternator this winter when it died at school. It was less than 20 fucking degrees outside and I was without a garage to do it in. I think they did a good job, and they did it really quickly. They called me in less than 2hrs when it was done.
MIKELABZ
BOLT-ONZ:: the EGR valve cost $300 and the install cost $25. DEALER:: EGR valve $300 labor $210. it takes like one person to install an EGR valve so why is the dealer cahrging so much extra for labor. they charge 8 times the amount that BOLT-ONZ charged. and the only thing ou have to do is unsrew a coupla bolts and replace it. i'm still pissed the dealer charged $90 for an evaluation. SigEpCutlass
mike if it's that simple, do it yourself depending on your knowledge. Otherwise depending on where you live in Philly check out the pepboys around you.
DOHCRagtopguy
Mike, you may want to think about taking that EGR off and cleaning it and the passages in the manifold. They are notorious for getting totally carboned up and clogging. The EGR itself can be carefully dismantled and cleaned. Personally, I would do that before shelling out that kind of bread for a new one.
MIKELABZ
i know the bare minimum about cars, but i have a good sense of how everything works. the actual hands on stuff i leave to the pros, unless its something cosmetic like blacking out the brake lights or replacing the dome lights... simple things like that...when it comes to the engine unless somebody shows me first i'm better off leaving it be until i can get it to a certified mechanic... did i add... cheap certified mechanic... when i went to the olds dealer they said the EGR valve wasnt working and needed to be replaced.. it took that info to the other shop i go to and they said that they could replace it and that the worse case scenario was that the engine might stall or there might be hesitation when i try to accelerate... so.... the check engine light still comes on after long distances and/or after speeding, but for now i just have to ignore it until we decide when to get it fixed... its just a hassle to see that light come on and think that my car isnt performing up to its utmost standard... its like watching your favorite basketball player miss a lay-up becuase he has an injured wrist.. digitaloutsider
I would not go to a place called "BOLT-ONZ", but that's just me..
supreme_style21
I would not go to a place called "BOLT-ONZ", but that's just me.. :withstupid: Go to a different auto parts store. Buy your EGR. Pick up a Chiltons/Haynes manual and have at it. The 20 bucks you spend on a manual is an obvious savings over the 60/hour you'll end up paying a mechanic. Some things are difficult.. Just read in there and take your time. May take a little longer and a little more elbow grease on your end of the deal, but the savings can be and will be substantial. Weigh the options. If you've got the cash to spare, go for it I guess.

MIKELABZ
all i know is that i can save $210 just by giving BOLT-ONZ a call...and they would only charge $25 for the install... sure i could order the $300 dollar peice and install it myself but hey they got the tools and by the time i buy all the tools they got i would have spent that $25 that i could have used to have them put it in...
