Knock sensor disconnected, is there damage???

Today I decided to finally change my motor mount among a few other things under the car. After completing everything I ran the car before putting it back on the ground and everything seemed fine, so i went for a test drive. I didn't get more than a couple blocks away and SES came up and the car seemed to be running a bit rough but I was expecting that cause I had the battery disconnected. I drove home and pulled the code "43" so I jacked the car up again popped underneath and found the knock sensor disconnected, actually the brittle plastic had split.

I managed to get the sensor connected so I can drive it till I get a new one, and it seems to be running ok, but I drove it 5 blocks with no knock sensor.

My question is what's the likelyhood that I damaged the engine? What sort of damage would be done?

Do get it fixed. Mine went out a while ago, and the car ran like PISS. I raced a late 80s/early 90s Firebird V6 adn we were neck and neck! Yah it pissed me off.

But i drove it for like a month or two figuring out what it was, and it didn't hurt the motor at all.

Good to know that everything should be fine, I was just concerned cause the first few blocks I was ripping on it pretty hard

I plan on fixing it first thing in the morning.

Thanks,

the same thing happened to me. the KS connector got brittle and crumbled apart, leaving only the metal prong that slides in the KS. i 'fixed' it temporarily by wrapping the prong with fine metal wire, and pushed it into the KS so it's stuck in there pretty good. when i have the engine out next month i'll solder in a new KS pigtail and get it done the right way.

i drove around with mine disconnected for awhile and didn't damage anything.

well unlike you, i hit the plastic housing on mine with an oil filter wrench handle. i hit it hard enough that it f*cked the connection. My check engine light was on, and then the car died once on my way to get a new one. Yea...you should get that fixed.

Well I managed to find a good one today at the wreckers and soldered it in. I'm glad I don't have the auto anymore, cause it was so easy to do from underneath, only took a couple minutes. Runs great now.

I think the 3100's have it by the oil filter which is on the front, while all the gen 2's have it on the rear of the block above the trans between the firewall. On the auto there is like 3/8" of a inch to work with.

FWIW, Checkout my signature line...

My check engine light has been on since last September, CODE 43.

I tried quite a few things to try and get rid of it but it won't go away (what mechanics told me to try and what I found on the internet/read in books).

I got fed up with it and said screw it, I have another 3800 engine ready to go if it screws up.

I've put around 25,000kms on the engine with that code. The engine does run slightly rougher at idle when its on (once in a blue moon the light goes away) It doesn't run right when you go WOT, seems like it misfires. It passed emissions test without any problems. The numbers were quite low.

I ran my car for about 3 months with a dead KS. Did not notice any preformance loss. I only had a bad idle cold. Also the only time the SES light was on was when the car was cold. No damage to the engine still runs like a champ, and will beat any 3.1 W-body from 88-93 around here. At leats that's what i noticed at the track. even took a 95 GP. My guess is the low mileage gives me the edge.
