88RegalCustom
look, I wont lie, the car is going to hell... Oil is leaking, coolant too, but it might just be that damn cap... and that's just a start .... anyways... I'm wondering if this engine is worth repairing, or if I would be better off swapping another one eighter another 2.8 or perhaps a 3.1.... the engine have over 240,000kms, past over I guess cause the ODO was already busted when I got it in April it still runs good, but it's sometimes stubburn... whatever any hints anyone? THe_DeTAiL3R
I don't think a 3.1 swap would really be worth it unless your 2.8 is really fuct. However 2.8s are slow as hell compared to 3100 engines. If my car had major engine issues, I'd scrap it (cause the car is a POS overall) however otherwise if I needed a new engine I'd try to do a 3x00 swap, which I think would be the easiest and most worthwhile swap. gp90se
a 2.8 is a dog of a motor, period. a 3.1 isnt to much better but its something, as well as a direct boltin. if you wanted to go 3100/3400/3.4 TDC then your going to need a subframe as well as the engine. also, your 4t60 wont work with a 3x00 or 3.4, so u will need to swap that as well. -Jeff
excelsior
cheap route = 3.1. Expensive route = 3400....you pick
88RegalCustom
well it's gonna be the cheap route... Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think I read something here a while ago about swapping the 3100 head on the 3.1 cause there's more mods for the 3.1 engine or something like that... Yeah, I read about the tranny, I loose my digital dash well it was fun while it lasted anyone have any ideas how to make a nice dash? 88 buick regal custom coupe
THe_DeTAiL3R
Hmm I never thought about the dash.. Hey there IS a 1988 Cutlass with a 3100 (complete, not a top end swap) that is MPFI (using the original ECM, tuned chip of course). I think its a pretty cool car the stuff he did to it. http://3100mpfi.com the guy's name is Taylor, he's signed up on this board and http://60degreeV6.com username 3100MPFI I think. As far as using a 3.1 why would you have to lose your dash? If I'm correct you could use your tranny you'd just need the VSS from the 3.1 doner car. They did make the 3.1 with both 4T60e and old 4T60
rudefyet
you could rebuild your 2.8 using the top end and intake off an new 3400 or Gen III 3100....just and idea that'd give you a little better power then the stock 2.8...aprrox 165hp i'd say
