Benefits of 2.5" mandrel exhaust

Recommended Posts

I'm currently looking to update my exhaust. Right now I have a glasspack in place of the cat then 2.25 piping to the other glasspack in place of the stock resonator, then splits into 2.25 Y pipe into dual 40 series Flowmasters.

What do you guys think of me going 2.5" all the way to the muffs? I have an auto and I heard that will be an issue.

Also looking at removing my flows in place of a single Borla XR-1 Sportsman Race muffler. Read on some exhaust article that it was one of the best mufflers you can get because of its internal design.

So let me know, and yes I know the ehaust posts have been beaten down like Rodney King, but I feel this post is unique in its own sense.

2.5" will help you out, the LQ1 loves to breathe. Your going to want to have a resonator or something in line otherwise it will sound raspy. Get a high flow cat, 2.5" piping to the muffler, do a 2.25" Ypipe into a set of resonated tips. That might sound alright, and should give you a decent performance gain.

I think that sounds like an excelent choice.........muffler included. It might be a little loud though if that is the ONLY muffler you are going to run..........not crazy race car loud, but loud nonetheless.

Also buy enough bends to do your downpipe too (that's only like 1 extra "U" bend)............it shouldn't be TOO restrtictive in stock form, but some of the later cars got a dual wall DP (to help cat light off) that IS pretty restrictive.

And yes..........2.5in will still keep exhaust gas velocity high enough for your low end torque to not be affected negatively.

If you DO decide to re-add a cat, I'd pony up the extra cash and get a Random Technology or Magnaflow Carsound cat...........they cost more, but also have better quality than your run of the mill Catco's and Dynomax's.

i really dont like the magnaflow cats, they die....lol

2.5 on your car from the manifold back, no cat and them mufflers should be good. wont hurt ya low end torque and just about perfect when ya add boost =)

naw, not for what he's doin....if he does it. cant put a 3" DP on a 3.4 manifold, so your going to have a bottleneck either way, the 2.5 will be fine.

Loud and raspy right now. I also have a rattling sound around 2000 rpms(also had that on stock exhaust). Im thinking theres a heat shield somewhere thats nice and loose. I need to crawl under there sometime to check it out.

Check the shields over your exhaust tips, that's the only thing that rattles on my 93 Prix' because of my loud ass exhaust.

Can they be tightened down, or do i have to remove them?

They can be tightened, it helped mine a bit, but they still slightly rattle. They should be held on w/ 10mm bolts, you're probably going to have to tighten them w/ a 10mm wrench(unless your tips allow you enough room to get a ratchet in there).

EDIT: I wouldn't remove them completely because your exhaust will likely burn your bumper back there.

I've got one on the TGP as well, no problems at all...it's been on there a little over a year.
