kp
I have the heads off my 92Lumina (3.1L). Need to know if sealer is required on the head bolts during installation. The factory manual says yes. The original bolts had sealer on them, but the bolts don't appear to go into the water jacket. The Felpro bolt kit I got indicated sealer is pre-applied if necessary, but only one of their bolts has sealer on them. Also, what type of sealer is recommended. I have used the white teflon paste in a tube before, but I would like to use the teflon tape that plumbers use. What do you think?
god910
Yes, they enter the jacket, yes liquid teflon is the way to go. Davis just went through this.
musthavemuzk
most definitelyuse some goop. we got my 90 cutlass 3.1 back together last weekend. the new head bolt box said to use pipe sealant on the threads if they go into the water jacket. i think the head gasket set said the same thing. haynes said to use that as well as rtv on the bottom of the headbolts. we did that and i have put almost 200 miles on since then and so far so good. i bought all permatex goop for reassembly. ultra black hi temp rtv gasket maker 598B antiseize 133a high temp thread sealant tiny tube part number on tube is 59214 plus of course lots of gaskets and some sensors since i had full access to things with heads off.
