wiring is smoking HELP

I had two sets of 2 small red LED's that i was wiirng into my car. they are 12v/ set.

Since i only had one outlet, i decided to splice one set into the other. I matched up all the wires and ground, taped everything up and plugged them in... well all the connections started smoking and the plug did too. So i disconnected everything and put the plugs back the way they were, and everything still smoked even with the normal amount of LED's per line. WTF is up with that? Luckily, i didnt blow a fuse and everything in the car works fine except the damn LED's...

Why would it do this even though i restored the LED's back the way they were, and is there any way to correct the problem?
