5 speed swap to a 96, need someone with experience

Oh great and mighty W-body Gods, please hear my plea!

I have a 1996 Grand Prix SE with the 3100,

The Tranny is on its way out, I give it less than a year before its undriveable. I am going to have it worked on at my cousins Transmission shop.

What I want to know is, what all do I need to swap a complete working 5 speed into my car?

I can't have any guessing, no jerry rigging, nothing. I need stuff that matches right up with as little modification as possible. Wiring is ok, because I understand that won't match right up.

So, can you help me? I need a list of what I will need, and how to do it, so I can just hand it to the mechanic and say "Here ya go, have fun"

I also need to know what parts I need to start collecting and from where.

And please no guessing, I only want to hear from the guys that have experience. I don't want "Well, my brothers nephews cousins uncle said..." or "I thought I heard...". I need people that have done this, or researched it enough to know what they are talking about. So unless you know your stuff, please don't post. I've had a hard time weeding through the forum trying to find whats factual and whats not, so thats why I made this post.

Thanks

Here's a fact for you, you either need a 3100 5 speed PCM, or switch to a 7727 and change back to OBD1. (MPFI, whereas SFI> jo00) Surely the Beretta's came w/ a 3100 5 speed didn't they? Might be a good place to start. HTH.

Well I'd conside this an uncomplete list but I'll do the best that I can

GM 282 5 spd Tranny

Clutch Pedals and linkage

Clutch Rev

Since your GP is OBDII... you might need to reprogram the PCM.... Ask Ben Phelps (Vegeta) And he might be able to lend some insight in this area

Travis (SoccrplyerGTP) Should be able to point you in the right directions with minute items needed for a swap.

The 282 manual Trannys were used with the 2.8's and the 3.1's while the beefer 284 manual tranny was used in the 3.4 GP's .

Hello Tom.... looks like I am your man you've been looking for.

I'm the pioneer of the 5 speed swap into a 94+ car. I have and know pretty much everything you will need. I spent the better half of 210 hours on my swap as I had no writeup/picture layout to look at. Are you seriously gonna give this custom job to a mechanic? Good lord you must be loaded! The best thing like I usually suggest is to pick up a parts car. It will come with the computer, harness, fuse block, HM-282 transmission, axels, axel adapter, shift cables, shifter, clutch hyd., pedal assembly, narrower/longer brake booster, firewall plate (88-93 one or modified 94+, I welded half of both of them together), modify the 94+ bar(added for support for the newly added stock SRS Airbags), transmission mount, transmission bracket, etc.... you WILL need. It will also not be fun/timely trying to piece the swap together from various yards/cars.

Not too worried about wiring. All you need are a few resistors to make the trans think you're always in gear, but I'd have to see the 96 wiring diagrams first.

my swap can be seen here- http://www.cardomain.com/id/soccrplayrgtp

and brians can be seen here- http://www.brian89gp.com/transmission/5spd.htm

Let me know if you would like me to do it :D I'm for hire.

You don't have any problems w/ the car seeing no load on decel? Most OBD1's will die w/ no load on decel. I bet it sure does idle funny on decel at least.

Well, I didn't see the part about the PCM from the donor car. I just looked at the statement above. I would like to talk to someone w/ resistors used to trick the PCM. Idle should be crazy. If YOU wired in a resistor lemme know about the idle.

I have not done an OBDII conversion thus far. I have not had to use an automatic PCM for a manual swap yet. I've always found one at a yard to save the headaches. Have yet to try it.
