jjs316
Ok, Im not sure if ill make sense or not, so if i dont please tell me and ill try to make more sense. My cars timing belt broke and a shop here in town that my dads buddy owns is doing the work for us. They bought the special cam tools from GM and a book from GM about the engine, but they are not sure how to put it back together. While they have it apart they are going to change the timing chain too and they were said that all the links were the same but one, and they were wondering if that had to go in a certin position or if it was just a master link? Is there any easy way of getting this thing back together and timed right? he was asking me too put all kinds of stuff on here and im not really sure what all he said but i think he asked What to do after you put the cam tools on there? And do you line up the timing gears some how? Im sure i missed some stuff so ill probably be back with more, but if anyone can help and understand what im trying to say, Thanks
WhiteOut
First off, which engine do you have and what year? You mention both a timing chain and belt, which is it? If this is for a 3.4 DOHC I also might suggest that you try using http://www.60degreev6.com and go to the forum section. While there's quite a few people here that can give you help on the 3.4 there's a multitude of people over there who are flat out LQ1 crazy. dbtk2
Ummm...I'm pretty sure the 3.4L doesn't have a timing chain. Maybe I'm wrong...but how are you gonna replace something it doesn't have. Shawn
cutlassdude96
the 3.4 have both a timming chain and belt
Robby1870
Yeah, the timing belt is just for the cams, to keep them in time with one another. The chain is to keep the crank and cams in time with one another, then the serpentine belt to run the accessories
95DropTop
Please don't take this the wrong way, but if the guy who is going to do about a grand+ work to your car is asking you to post on this site to get information so he can repair your car, you are probably going to the wrong place. I lucked up and got a local shop with two mechs that worked dealerships for 10 years or so and they breezed through my 3.4 head gasket/oil leak/etc without me asking anything...well, I checked here to verify that what they told me was correct, but they knew what they were doing and the car runs like a top right now!!! I realize he is a friend of sorts, but I would take the car to some one who can tell you the answers to the questions you have, not the other way around. Good luck with whatever you decide to do. For the info you seek, refer him to 60*v6 website and pray.

jjs316
Heres a question? To time this engine, which cams need to be turned down, Exhaust or Intake? And which cams are those?

Bolt_Crank
If it's a dealership that says no, they're just being lazy... my GM dealership is willing to work on my Z w/o any complaints at all (and I get parts at cost! )
