Timing belts

My car just passed the 120k mark, I I dont think the timing belt has been changed... I am going to be back and forth to the shore this summer and definetly need it changed... My friend's went on her Richard Petty Edition when she was on the highway and the engine got ruined.

Anyway, what would I be looking at to have it replaced on the 3.4L?

600 by a garage....and hope they can do it right. 200 for parts yourself. What engine do you have? Only the 3.4 will you have to worry about the belt.

Read the link they posted.......there is even PICTURES. It is a fairly complex job......retiming the cams can be a bit tricky....you have to either get or make the right tools to hold the cams flat....and lining the crankshaft up with the mark can be a bitch if everything is greasey.

I'd say do it yourself if you have a decent set of tools and some sort of service manual (preferably GM's but aftermarket will do) to help out....the write up is nice, but a book right at the car is better.

Otherwise, take it to some other shop.........hopefully its not ran by idiots.

get a service manual and hunt for the tools. service manuals rock because they have everything down that needs to be there. id say try it yourself because its nice to finish it and say, "no labor charges." plus, with something like that you can be proud of what you accomplished.

Very true with the labor...

I've never really done any extreeme work on my engine, and since I have the dreaded 3.4, I'm afraid of really fucking it up. Our tool collection is... well. frightening.

thanks guys

all you really need is a regular metric socket driver set since most of the nuts/bolts are 8, 10, 13, and 15 mm in the engine bay and the timing tools. dont be scared, just follow instructions in a manual. plus, theres many people with 3.4s that are willing to help with whatever you may have come up.

Yeah ive done 3.4L DOHC timing belts a thousand times, my first one was when i was 15 and it broke while the engine was running and it broke the timing chain tensioner , so i fixed it all myself , first time doing it and it ran perfect when i was done. ever since then ive done all my friends timing belts and ive tried all kinds of timing mods. all succesfull, so if you need any help ill make sure you get it done right. just email me

right now it takes me only a few hours, i can do it in 1 night , i dunno maybe 4 hours i can do it in. but for you id say take a weekend off and start bright and early saturday morrning and for sure you will be taking it for a test drive sunday night .just make sure you buy all your parts in advance and buy them from a dealership, you need 1 belt, 2 idler pulleys , thats it.

Below are a couple of links about changing the timing belt on a 1995 3.4 Olds. I had posted them for someone else once before.

Kind of nice to know you've made it as far as you have on the original belt. My 3.4 has 62,000 miles on it, and I was hoping to wait until fall to change the belt. I've looked at the belt and it looks OK, so here's hoping I don't wreck an engine by waiting a few months..
