slick Posted June 6, 2004 Report Posted June 6, 2004 Ok, i need new tires and exhaust bad. For the exhaust: I'm thinking of going 2.5" back, with high flow cat, and undecided mufflers, because im not sure on what to get yet. I'm unsure of the diameter, just because of all the engine work that has been done, wondering if it would be more efficient for me to go with a larger diameter(check cardomain page for details on mods). I want something that will flow and sound good. I hear that magnaflow's are good with the 3.4's, true? I just don't want no fartcannons/coffee can mufflers. I might end up using the stock tips, but maybe i'll go with something different, i'll decide when the time comes. So, what did you all pay for your exhaust? Tires: I need something with a better tire wear than the stupid Falkens that I had on my car. They were absolutely horrible, and didn't handle the best. I most definately do not recommend them at all. I'm kinda liking these tires here: BFGoodrich Scorcher T/A Black at about $105 a piece from tirerack. Any other suggestions? Thats about my price range too, just because i just don't have the money for anything better, and these are only on during the summer anyways. I don't do no autocrossing, but a nice tire design is wanted, just mainly for the looks. Quote
gp90se Posted June 6, 2004 Report Posted June 6, 2004 theres only 1000 posts on exhaust, but with the 3.4 engine, 2.5 is plenty of size for pipe, u might actually hurt low end but make up for it up top. mandrel bent is the most important factor when it comes down to pipes. magnaflow do sound pretty nasty on ya motor. As far as tires, only advise I have is 2 stay away from toyo, never got traction in any bad weather with em. -Jeff Quote
93CutlassSupreme Posted June 7, 2004 Report Posted June 7, 2004 i paid just about $200 for my exhaust, and another $40 on tips Quote
slick Posted June 7, 2004 Author Report Posted June 7, 2004 Ok, 2.5" it is then. Yes, i do plan on going mandrel bent. It wouldn't be worth it unless i did. So magnaflow sounds like crap, eh? Well, any suggestions on what to get? I definately don't want something raspy. Quote
gp90se Posted June 7, 2004 Report Posted June 7, 2004 i ment nasty good I ran dynomax on the 3.1 GP and it was raspy, so ya prolly dont wanna go with them. dronemasters suck, why, not cauz they dont flow, but there so over used. people have been tellin me lately that edelbrock mufflers sounds sweet, so u might wanna look into them. -Jeff Quote
slick Posted June 7, 2004 Author Report Posted June 7, 2004 I guess depending on the price, i might just look at them. Depends on if I can buy my stuff and have them install it, or if they will only install stuff that they order. Gotcha on that nasty part! 93Cutlass- You know i love the way your exhaust looks, and sounds. Plus, thats a good price too. Was that manifolds back for that price? Quote

Was that manifolds back for that price? no, just a split after the rear monoleaf. i would have done it myself, but i didn't have a mig welder at the time. here's a pic of how it's set up. you can see where the second pipe branches off the original single exhaust. slick Posted June 7, 2004 Author Report Posted June 7, 2004 Any idea on what it would have cost manifolds back? Quote
maybe2fast Posted June 7, 2004 Report Posted June 7, 2004 remember what my car sounded like (imagine it with a straight pipe and not an empty canister for a cat.) Dynomax sound good! I like them then again I only have one and it sounds great Quote
slick Posted June 7, 2004 Author Report Posted June 7, 2004 My only question is whether or not the Dynomax would sound good on the 3.4.... Quote

I like them then again I only have one and it sounds great another plus is dynamax mufflers are only $40 a piece, at least around here. i did like the catless sound too. slick, try calling any mr. mufflers if they are in your area. they don't charge much for exhaust work, but it won't be mandrel bent. slick Posted June 7, 2004 Author Report Posted June 7, 2004 Nope, no Mr. Mufflers or anything like that around here. Its mainly just auto repair garages that happen to have exhaust stuff in there garage. Quote
93CutlassSupreme Posted June 7, 2004 Report Posted June 7, 2004 My only question is whether or not the Dynomax would sound good on the 3.4.... it *might* be similar to a magnaflow, because they're both straight through designs. go straight pipes if you don't want to deal with mufflers!!!!! i had dual straight pipes for a while and loved it. mfewtrail Posted June 7, 2004 Report Posted June 7, 2004 I would likely choose magnaflows or some other similar straight-through style muffler on a 3.4. Shop around a bit before getting any exhaust work done, most places will try to rip you off. EDIT: Another setup to consider(after hearing 3.4 owners opinions on this) is just getting a high-flow catalytic converter and a resonator and using no mufflers. I've got this setup on my 90 TGP(yeah, I know 3.1) and it sounds awesome, it has a low growl to it and isn't loud at all(I figured it would be loud as hell judging by my other 3.1 w/ exhaust on it)..I've had about 20 people stop me at gas stations and whatnot and tell me that the TGP sounds and looks great. 8) Quote
slick Posted June 7, 2004 Author Report Posted June 7, 2004 I won't be able to make it back up there until probably whenever i move to Toledo for school. I know of a few muffler places about 20 miles south of here i might try, if anything. Quote
93CutlassSupreme Posted June 7, 2004 Report Posted June 7, 2004 Shop around a bit before getting any exhaust work done, most places will try to rip you off. yes they will. i got quoted $650 for my setup that i had later done for $200. i would buy your tips from an auto parts store, and then have the shop put them on, if they won't, do it yourself. you will get ripped off buying tips from the shop. slick Posted June 7, 2004 Author Report Posted June 7, 2004 OH, i definately am. I plan on calling up about 5-10 local places, getting quotes, and talking them down with fake quotes, all of course once i save myself a few hundred dollars Quote
topless94style Posted June 7, 2004 Report Posted June 7, 2004 I got my done buy a local shop...Exhaust Pros. They did a good job, they ordered all the necessary piping from summit racing. I bought a highflow carsound cat, 18" magnaflow round muffler, and 2 XL serious magnaflow mufflers from ebay. I went with those because they were cheap, same muffler but they only have a 1 yr warrenty where as the others have lifetime. Also, have 3" tips and the piping is all 2.5", except the Y pipe is 2.25". I know there are others on this board who have the same set up, or very close too, and I love the way it sounds. Its not loud at all unless you really get on it..... Its also pretty cool when im driving, and i let my foot off the gas, youd never know I had exhaust work done. Quote
slick Posted June 7, 2004 Author Report Posted June 7, 2004 Looks like magnaflows it is then, and of course a high flow cat. Someone was telling me to get a resonator. Should i get one? Quote
93GTP Posted June 7, 2004 Report Posted June 7, 2004 You will not be disappointed with Magnaflows. Make sure you get a resonator put in there! I speak from experience when I say it makes a big difference. My setup is as follows: Carsound (Magnaflow) high flow cat, Magnaflow Magnapack in place of stock resonator, and a pair of Magnaflow mufflers. I was and am very pleased with the results. Quote
93CutlassSupreme Posted June 8, 2004 Report Posted June 8, 2004 wait, you had a stock resonator? my car doesn't? Quote
93GTP Posted June 8, 2004 Report Posted June 8, 2004 wait, you had a stock resonator? my car doesn't? Yep, I sure did. I have yet to see a w-body that doesn't have one. It should be in the section of piping that kicks out furthest to the passenger side of your car (right before the rear p/s wheel). Perhaps someone has already removed yours. Are you sure it isn't there? It doesn't have a much larger diameter than the stock exhaust pipe and has the shape (and size) of a cherry bomb. I guarantee you that if you don't have one and you put one in there, you will cut down on the trademark 60* V6 raspiness. Quote
Cornerdealy Posted June 8, 2004 Report Posted June 8, 2004 this is what magnaflows sound like on a 3.4 http://24.168.84.177/ftp/Car_idling.mpg Quote
