Guest TurboSedan
today i removed the gas tank so i could replace the broken level sender. i removed the fuel dampener that goes in between the metal line on the sender and the fuel pump itself. i'm now using just a piece of fuel line and two clamps instead. will this be ok? It looked like a little pice of rubber "red" right but in line. when i take my tank out i will look for it. yes that is it the fuel pump did not fit 'snugly' with the dampener installed - it was just too short. i replaced it with a piece of fuel line that was slightly longer and it allowed the pump to fit snugly in the level sender/hanger assembly. fwiw it is a replacement pump for a TGP application from Advance Auto. the car runs great without the dampener....i think the fuel pump might be very slightly louder but it could just be my imagination. it sure is nice to finally have a working gas gauge again my brother told me he did exactly the same thing when he installed the Walbro in-tank electric fuel pumps in all of his Turbo Dodges. he said his fuel pump/hangers were very similar to the one i pulled out of my Cutlass today. just want to be sure....thanks for the reply! BTW - dropping the gas tank and changing a fuel pump is soooo much easier with 2 people and only 1/4 tank of gas! altho the rear 2 fuel tank strap bolts are still a bitch to get to! GnatGoSplat
When I replaced mine, I bought a new dampener, but almost all fuel pumps come with a small length of bypass tube to bypass the dampener. Some people have said that running without the dampener for awhile will cause problems. I doubt that's true, I only replaced mine because some engineer that went to engineering school gets paid a salary to decide that stuff needs to be there. I figure they know better than I do why it's there.
Guest TurboSedan
cool, i won't worry about it then. i would have rather used the dampener, but i was afraid the fuel pump would fall out of the sender/pickup assembly it was so loosely mounted. if the dampener was maybe 1/2" longer it probably wouldn't have been a problem. thanks
