89GPSE
Hi, There is an set screw of some sort on the top of my thermostat housing. I would hope I could use it to set the thermostat from closing all the way, and keep it running cooler at the track while in the pits, but I don't want to mess with it untill I know what it is. Anybody know its function? thanks, justin
Guest Anonymous
It's a bleed screw. For bleeding air out of your coolant system.
91CutlassConv
The screw you speak of on top of the housing is nothing more then a vent for the cooling system. It is used when draining and filling the system. Opening it allows air to escape and simple physics takes over and the coolant drains, also aids in refilling the system. There are also vents in the block itself that serve the same purpose. Jason
THe_DeTAiL3R
I think the screw on mine is corroded or something, cause it doesn't do anything when you turn it, but yes its for bleeding the air out. Since my screw seems to be fucked I just use the bolts around the housing to bleed mine, and it works fine. If you want to run cooler at the track get a 180 or 160 t-stat, but engines get hot no matter what if you take multiple runs. A 180 with a manual switch for the fan would probably work really well. 89GPSE
I will just do what I did before. I shut the car off in nutral and pushed it through the staging lanes till i got to the track. Keeps it cool.
THe_DeTAiL3R
You can always do the paperclip into the diagnostic port to fire up the fans too
89GPSE
Hey, Thanks good idea. Will that work with the car running? or will it damage the ecm? -Justin
THe_DeTAiL3R
Pretty sure you can only do it with the engine OFF. I've never tried it but I think it might just not work... dunno
rudefyet
when you turn on the a/c or heater the fans come on with it....then just turn it off when you're ready to go
