cs-x Posted May 27, 2004 Report Posted May 27, 2004 Can anyone tell me step by step how to rotate the engine on my 89 2.8 cutlass, and/or my girlfriends 3.1 regal? Anytime I try to, it NEVER goes. It's seems to be stuck on something. It's the same on both cars, stuck at the same point. I'm not sure what it's called, but it appears to be pulling up on the pipe that's connected to the muffler (it runs under the car from the engine to the muffler) I'm really tired of paying full price on plug replacement when they only do the rear 3. If they're actually getting done.. who knows, I can't check it out :? Quote
Heza Posted May 27, 2004 Report Posted May 27, 2004 unbolt engine torque struts. latch a cargo strap to the engine hoop or whatever and then latch the carbo strap to pull the engine forward. on my gfs 3100 GP it rocks all the way forward almost. Quote
god910 Posted May 27, 2004 Report Posted May 27, 2004 Man, you beat me too it. Neutral helps, the problem I have is my turbo hitting my intercooler. Probably not what yer running into though. Quote

Probably not what yer running into though. How could your turbo hit your IC you must mean the reciever-dryer brkt. Unless you put an IC infront of your IC. Tough to plumb though. cs-x Take your alt of with the bracket, (3 15mm bolts)put a towel on your intake plenum an lay the alt on it. It's safest to disconnect the battery first. You can also use a pony clamp(furniture clamp) to pull the motor forward. Jud Quote
digitaloutsider Posted May 28, 2004 Report Posted May 28, 2004 It's not THAT hard. Detach the dog bones and pull like a mother! That's all that's involved. Quote
Z34door Posted May 28, 2004 Report Posted May 28, 2004 park car on slight decline. set ebrake. pull dogbones. leave in park and push forward. Quote
jamcneely Posted May 28, 2004 Report Posted May 28, 2004 Here we go again with all these jackass ways of pulling the engine forward when a pry bar will do just fine. Quote
Guest TurboSedan Posted May 28, 2004 Report Posted May 28, 2004 pry bar? jeez i just grab the rear of the plenum and pull until i can stick a bolt thru the slave hole on the dogbone. Jay - i can't believe you can rock the motor forward far enough that the turbo hits the intercooler  are your lower motor/tranny mounts ok? Quote
BIGBULS Posted May 28, 2004 Report Posted May 28, 2004 Call me backward, but I say just yank off the upper intake manifold (what....7 bolts, a coolant line, the EGR and a PCV line......plus a couple of sensors?). It's so easy to do, and doesn't piss off your motor mounts. This is for an LQ1 BTW (with it's nice DEEP plug wells). Each to his own............... BTW......I DO know that the local GM dealer yanks the IM (on 3.4's).....not sure WHO is doing it right. Quote
Canada Posted May 28, 2004 Report Posted May 28, 2004 I yank the upper intake manifold as well (on LQ1s).......besides, the intake gaskets are pry leaking anyways...if they aren't............they will be in 10k miles. I haven't had to change plugs on a pushrod 660 yet. Quote
Guest TurboSedan Posted May 28, 2004 Report Posted May 28, 2004 i don't usually rotate the engine forward either. i just disconnect the battery and remove the alternator & bracket and that gives me a ton more room. Quote

god910 Posted May 29, 2004 Report Posted May 29, 2004 Hey take it easy on me guys, it's been all winter since I even looked at the piece of crap. Anyhow, my memory is failing like my TGP's wallet-thrasher 3... The turbo was hitting the cover for the a/c accumulator. Sheesh, sorry massa, don't beat me massa. Quote
