89GPSE Posted May 26, 2004 Report Posted May 26, 2004 Hi, I know my 2.8's 3.1's and 3.4's are 60 degree V6's and the 4.3's are 90 degree V6's but what are the 3.8's? -Justin Quote
DaveFromColorado Posted May 26, 2004 Report Posted May 26, 2004 the 3.0, 3.3, 3.8, and 4.3 are all 90 degree v-6's. --Dave Quote
89GPSE Posted May 26, 2004 Author Report Posted May 26, 2004 So will all 90 degree parts interchange from a 4.3 to a 3.8 and a (SBC in some cases) just like the 4.3? Quote
biff85ta Posted May 26, 2004 Report Posted May 26, 2004 No the 3.8 is a buick designed motor originally as is the 3.3 not sure about the 3.0 as I have never dealt with one. Quote
god910 Posted May 27, 2004 Report Posted May 27, 2004 You can use SBC (small journal) rods on a 3.1, after a little bit of love that is. Quote
joey b Posted May 27, 2004 Report Posted May 27, 2004 Isn't the 4.3 just a stroked 3.8, just like the 5.0 and 5.7? Is the 3.8 a bored 3.3 like the 3.1 and 3.4? Quote

The 4.3 is a stroked Chevy 229CI V6 (which was 3.8L), which is just a Small Block Chevy V8 with 2 cylinders chopped off. The Chevy 229 hasn't been used since the early 80's. The Buick 231CI (3.8L) is what evolved into the 3800. That motor has nothing in common with the 4.3. The 3.0 and later the 3.3 (3300) are derivitives of the Buick 231, and share the same architecture as the 3800. Quote
89GPSE Posted May 28, 2004 Author Report Posted May 28, 2004 A 4.3 is a chevy 350 with 2 cyl lopped off. It has the same bore and stroke as a chevy 350 and can use the same pistons and connecting rods, and the same timing set-ups. Great motor for aftermarket. Quote

Actually the Chevy 3.8 (229cid) and 4.3 (262cid) share the same 3.48" stroke but the 3.8 is a 3.736" bore like the 305 V-8 and the 4.3 is a 4" bore like the 350. The 305 and 305 also share a 3.48" stroke. There was also a 200 cid V-6 based on the gone but mostly forgotten 267 V-8 which also uses the 3.48" stroke. If you thought the 267 was a turd try one with 2 less cylinders ! :gone2far: Quote
