wolfy950
My Cutlass Supreme is acting up. I have been getting persistent code 53 (high voltage) even after changing out the alternator. I have also had 23 and replaced the IAT sensor. The plugs are new and so is the air filter. Then i got code 15 (low coolant temp). Code 53 is the one that kkeeps coming back though. Where is the PCV? The car will start only if I have the gas pedal down part or all the way. Then it bucks and kiks. I got it out on the road and after 5 minutes it settled down and the SES light went off then it ran fine. When I stopped tho, the motor sped up and I had to hold the brake down hard. Then in neutral it ran about 2000 rpm for 3 or 4 secs then slowed down to normal idle. Any suggestions?
wolfy950
I should have said that this is a 1990 Cutlas Supreme SL 3.1L in Canada.
Slade901
Book says Code 53 will set if the voltage at ECM terminal B2 is greater than 17.1 volts for 2 seconds. Check the charging system. More than likely your alternator voltage regulator might be messed up. Have your alternator checked out since the voltage regulator is on the alternator. Code 15 is for CTS (low temperature) Code 14 is for CTS (high temperature) Both relates to CTS, probably it is wise to try to remove the CTS and try to clean it. Check it's wires and make sure it is fine. Probably CTS needs replacement. The PCV is located at the rear of the engine. The PCV hose is easily broken. I've replaced my PCV by removing the intake plenum and replacing the PCV hose with 6 inch fuel hose with same inside diameter of the original PCV hose. Robby1870
Ive seen a code 53 be thrown due to a bad ECM......just a thought if the other stuff doesnt work
wolfy950
I did change out the alternator. No improvement. How much for a replacement ECM?
Robby1870
ECM from a junkyard is cheap, maybe $50? I really dont know. Just get one that matches your engine/tranny/year

wolfy950
Well I bit the bullet and changed the ECM. $134 Canadian. ($100US) at Canadian Tire Store. It started good and idled good in the idle calibration. Out on the highway tomorrrow to see how long it lasts. Is there something that will ruin the new ecm like the old one. Well, it now runs sooooo smooooothly I can't believe it's the same car. :!: Starts good, idles great, and pulls away verrry nicely. Now for the PCV and then the flickering dash.
