93CutlassSupreme Posted April 22, 2004 Report Posted April 22, 2004 I might be selling my GP and getting a 97+ GTP if i have another problem with this car. i've said that many times, and then i relized how expensive new cars are, so i try to do the best with what i have 1/5 of the time i have had this car it has been in a shop getting worked on so it is just really old now and that is why i want a diffrent car. like i said, do the best with what you have. you think my car never breaks? i've spent many a cold day laying in the snow with a wrench frozen to my hand, swapping out a part that never should have failed in the first place. but, after a while i stopped bitching about it because i realized that whining wasn't going to make it any better. your car looks really nice, you should be happy with what you have. you know, many people don't have cars, and some of us bitch about the cars we have. has your car had 2 engine swaps in less then 9 months? I like my car and if i don't have any major problems between now and when we start looking for a car i'm not going to sell it most likely. I like the way my car look also and because no one in my school has a car with the B4U package (i think it is B4U) either you, or the previous owner, grossly abused that poor car Quote
Goph Posted April 22, 2004 Report Posted April 22, 2004 the one that had it before me because just after i got it the head gaskets blew and the heads needed work done to them. the second engine had some rebuilt problems. I take good car of it and really don't drive it hard. Quote

THe_DeTAiL3R Posted April 22, 2004 Report Posted April 22, 2004 Goph, I honestly think you have simply had really really really bad luck with your car! I haven't heard that much bad stuff about the 3100 engines, whoever is rebuilding them don't know what they are doing, or if they are used they must be junk. Something isn't right there. :? Quote
93CutlassSupreme Posted April 22, 2004 Report Posted April 22, 2004 Something isn't right there. :? exactly what i said Quote
99RegalGS Posted April 22, 2004 Report Posted April 22, 2004 I see a ton of 3100's and 3400's at the dealer getting their lower intake gaskets replaced. Also 3100 go through head gaskets more than 3.1's. Quote
THe_DeTAiL3R Posted April 22, 2004 Report Posted April 22, 2004 No doubt I think we all can agree that the 2.8/3.1 was the most reliable out of the 60* engines, but the 3100 is still pretty good and has more power. Once a 3100 has the crappy factory lower intake gaskets replaced it should be reliable for a long time. I read somewhere also that the Dexcool (or whatever its called) orange coolant in the 'newer' vehicles eats away at gaskets might be why they go through headgaskets more than 3.1s. Quote
GnatGoSplat Posted April 22, 2004 Report Posted April 22, 2004 The old green coolant was plenty good enough at eating away head gaskets. I don't think Dexcool can compete with it. Quote
GP1138 Posted April 22, 2004 Author Report Posted April 22, 2004 Idunno, my automotive teacher at my college made a big deal out of how much Dexcool sucks. Quote

Well I really have no idea.. I'll stick with the green stuff myself. One of the posts on this forum the guy claimed it was eating away at his gaskets. If theres any engine that needs to be kept cool its the L67! http://www.oqcgp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5917 Quote
93CutlassSupreme Posted April 22, 2004 Report Posted April 22, 2004 its not that hard to just flush your coolant every 2 years Quote
GnatGoSplat Posted April 22, 2004 Report Posted April 22, 2004 This is what the green stuff did to my head gaskets, and I flushed it EVERY YEAR. It was Prestone brand, maybe that's just the worst you can get? bigger pic I run Dex-cool now, but I sure as hell wouldn't leave it in there 5yrs. It's superior stuff if you pretend it's the old stuff and flush it every 1-2yrs. Lots of people say bad things about Dex-cool, and most of it has nothing to do with the coolant itself (i.e. sludge, leaking intake gaskets, etc.). Most of it is just coincidental... GM switched to the newer rubber & plastic intake gaskets about the same time they switched to Dex-cool so people made a connection there, but the 3.4 DOHC got those intake gaskets before Dex-cool and they still leak like a mofo even with the green stuff. Sludging is from the stop-leak pellets GM used to use in the late 90's. Quote
THe_DeTAiL3R Posted April 22, 2004 Report Posted April 22, 2004 I saw a guy yesterday with a newer Sunfire GT and I was like "you got stuff dripping on the road" he's like "yeah its leaking coolant" "okay." I wasnt' sure what it was cause it looked like it could have been a variety of fluids so it was obviously dexcool. Quote
GP1138 Posted April 22, 2004 Author Report Posted April 22, 2004 Ok. I just remember him telling me that Dexcool was horrible, never to use it. We'll see what the '95 Grand Prix has in it... Quote

rudefyet Posted April 22, 2004 Report Posted April 22, 2004 I've have dexcool right now....works great for me Like Shawn said...i wouldn't leave it in there 5 years though....or in a car that's just gonna sit out in my yard and not get used I've heard only bad things about it but oh well...If it is as horrible as people make it sound...it's not my problem since i'm selling this car Quote
