1989 Olds Cutlass Phantom

Hi! I wanted to drop by, after doign a search to find parts for my car, I came accross this site.. I am the proud owner of a 1989 Phantom. This car isn't a myth! LOL Mine isn't in the best shape, it needs body cladding and a new tranny, but I have one! It's beautiful! There's one problem, the sideskirts met their demise due to weather and age...and the company that made them, which was out of West Hartford CT, has been gone since 1991. The car is a basic fe3 suspention car with a special body kit. Nothing outragious other then the black paint and chrome rims.. Therew here 200 made, 100 black, 100 white. And where mostly soldat dealers in the New England area. They're highly sought after, I have met 2 other owners now, one back, one white. The other black is gogeous, and he spent alot of money resoring it, the white is still in a garageanda work in progress. They came with the 3.1L 6. If anyone has any questions, leave a post, and I'll try my best to answer, otherwise...nice tosee a community out there :D

I saw a mention of one on the cutlass part of the page, but so far nothing else. Like I said, right now, she's not pretty, I want to see if I can find a few pictures of one, specificly the front facia, I have a buddy that does fiberglass, and I want to have him make some new cladding for me. But when I get her, the facia was gone, right now she sits with very bad pait, a big dent in the side, and no cladding at all, but the VIN matches as a phantom, lil gold plaque on the console and all :) I plan to have all the decals replaced with airbrush pin stripes also. It's gonna be a busy summer... BTW I Was also offered $3500 from a local Olds collector for it...he caught it sitting behind my house driving by, I told him ,she ain't for sale :) I got this car by trading a 97 Geo Tracker for it! LOL Didn't know what I Was getting into :)

PhantomFE3 is the person I was thinking of, he's here in Minnesota too (from what I remember)

if you do a search for Him, I do believe he's got pictures of his car.

Ah, be nice to speak with him. I've been trying for months to find soemone who might know where I can get body parts for it without the expense of having them made.

I wouldn't doubt it, the hydra's in these cars from the factory are garbage, I've been a mechanic most of my adult life(I'm 22 now, went to a tech HS, then a trade school after), and they really are bad, not a bad design(which is why performance ones are good)but bad assembly and workmanship from the factory...example, mine slips in 1-2 2-3 and holds OD if you don't take it out yourself. Hopefully over the summer in the course of restoring the car, I want to put a getrag 5spd with a torson ltd slip. Also, even as a mechanic(my field leaned more toward Ford)I don't know a whole lot about the 3.1, can anyone tell me what would cause low oil pressure, but still run ok? I'ts not at the danger line yet, but it's getting there....I want to avoid a rebuild for awhile, it's pretty steady at 4 bars on the digital meter, but it fluxuates now...

4 bars is 56 psi.

holy crap my gauge has about 5-6 bars lit @ idle when warmed up, but i have about 11-12 bars lit while cruising on the highway....kinda surprising consider my high miles.

I think he was talking about 4 bars on the gauge.....not 4 Bars, the unit of pressure, lololol

Is the cladding made of fiberglass or urethane?

I have a bunch of Phantom pics at home, I just never updated the page.

I'll see if I can remember to dig some up tonight.

they;re urithane, and highly prone to weather damage and salt, so here in CT, they've gone to hell, I've removed all that was left, mainly the main sideskirts, which are still horribly cracked, but may be good enough to build a mold if need be. The front facia was the worst, it had NO support structure in it, and was wasted by my drunken girlfriend and a curb :\ I guess bad things happen to good cars ;) But that's the missing key for me is the front facia...I have no pics or even pieces left of it...anything to help would be great :)

phantom89, nice to see another CT resident in here. i think there is a fiberglass shop in middletown that can get the Phantom skirts.. i'll ask a friend of mine that has a white Phantom where she got hers.... i've never seen a black phantom yet. all ive seen are white ones. hit me up a PM or email me at Luminafreak92@aol.com

I have the pics, just let me know where to email them. That would be a lot easier than posting them.

If the original pieces were urethane, I'd recommend having the new pieces redone in urethane. You might be able to repair the original pieces. Lots of urethane repair stuff at http://www.urethanesupply.com

Yeah, I want the sideskirts and side cladding in urithane, but it would be better if the front facia could be fiberglass, it's more durable in the long run, and not as prone to salt damage. Middletown you say? Hmmm....the car origionally belonged to a Meriden cop! LOL I know of only one other black one in the state, and he lives in the next town over(Goshen)I was kinda suprised to see it myself, all my friends thought it was me driving around, heh.

Pics are on the way. Actually, urethane is much more durable (doesn't crack) and also more resistant to rock chips. That's why you'll never find a factory front bumper in fiberglass.

anti chip paint sealer.... it's a wonderful thing ;) got a few friends that had fiberglass front ends on their cars, works well for them, but urithane is more durable for such things, your right. The only thing that really bothers me is the lack of rigidity...which means that I'm gonna have to sit down with some strip metal and my mig welder and brace everything. The origionals where very VERY flimsy...somthing that could be easly solved had someonetaken the time to do it origionally. But, it's an added expense that would quickly be deemed un needed.anyone who owns a phantom has probably noticed or at least head of the sideskirts cracking just from getting in/out of the car. that's what happened to mine, and the owner of the other white on I know. But he repaired his, mine is kinda beyond that.

And thanks for the pics! but it's missing one thing....the front facia :( It's a beautiful peice that I would hate to try and replace with a lumina part or anything.... Z34, does your friend have the facia on hers? if so, think you can get a pic of it? If not...I can always meet you somewhere sometime... good to know other owners :)
