A/C Compressor Behaviour

Folks, in working out the little oddities in my "new" 92 regal I've noticed what seems to be some strange behaviour coming from the A/C compressor. It seems to engage and disengage very frequently for short bursts of about 5 seconds and then comes on again about 30 seconds later. I know this happens at idle but its hard to tell when I'm driving.

 

I can't tell if the AC works though because up here in Canada it's still only slightly above freezing, though the next week should be getting pretty warm.

 

I'm just wondering if anyone has seen this sort of behaviour before so I can maybe get a head start with the diagnosis.
