gotta v6
OK guys im a newbie and lookin into getting a z or cutlass to go along with my impala. I keep reading that the 4t60e are the weak links and cant handle much torque. But the cadillac eldorado and seville in 91-92 used the 4t60e with the 4.9L and their torque ratings was close to 275@3000rpms (i think). Is their a difference between the ones in the w-bodies and those in the caddy? The only thing i can think of is maybe the 4.9 makes most of its power at lower rpms than the dohc motors and the 4t60e can handle it at those lower rpms. I dont really know though, anyone have any ideas? thanks
slick
If anything, swap the internals from the 4T65E into the 4T60E.
GnatGoSplat
It's my understanding that the 4.9 Cadillacs and the cars with 3800 Series I Supercharged got 4T60-E HD trannies. I don't know the difference between an HD and non-HD, but one thing different is the FDR. I think it's 2.97 in the 3800's.
Hippie
It's my understanding that the 4.9 Cadillacs and the cars with 3800 Series I Supercharged got 4T60-E HD trannies.I don't know the difference between an HD and non-HD, but one thing different is the FDR. The only difference between the 4T60E behind my '95 Cad 4.9 and the one in my '95 Z/34 is the torque converter stall speed, temp sensor and FDR ratio. 2.84 for the Cad and 3.43 for the Z. Cad stall speed is 1500 vs. 2060 for the Z. Will be using an 1800 stall with 3.73 FDR in mine.
brian89gp
The HD got an extra clutch here and there, not sure beyond that. I have also heard that the 3.4 DOHC motors got the HD version.

Ive heard that too. Not sure if its 100% true though
MaroonRegal
I think it was a really limited number of 3.4DOHC cars that got the HD. Not most.
weasle_13
If anything, swap the internals from the 4T65E into the 4T60E. can you really do that, i am getting ready to rebuild my tranny, and what parts would i need to do this internals swap
manitcor
I dont think you can, there are many similarites between the 65 and the 60 Im not sure how much is actually swappable. A 60 can be built up. Though I took the easy route myself, I got a t65 from an 02 MC SS that got side swiped. 15,000 miles for just $500 shipped. Once I get my gears, valve body and LSD Ill be swapping it in 8)
weasle_13
so, to do a swap I need what? i have a 95 cutlass with a 4t60e, and want a 4t65e.
manitcor
im guessing your running a 3100 engine, to do this kind of swap you need to do the same thing I am doing which is upgrade to ODBII. I will be using a PCM from an 02 MC LS tuned by DHP. Of course this also requires a new harness and a change to your injectors (you have to upgrade to the new 22.5lb injectors and injector harness). So you get a power boost with this swap as well but its a bit more involved than just dropping the tranny in.
weasle_13
how much woud that be in parts? roughly.
manitcor
well lets see so far: 22.5 lb injectors w/ injector harness - free (hook up) Clean & flow balenece injectors (optional) $80 PCM from 02 MC LS - $30 (J/Y) DHP PCM Tuning (optional but reccomended) - $200 Engine harness - $150 Axels - $150 4t65 from 02 MC SS 3.29 FDR 15k miles - $500 EGR Blocking plate - Free (hook up) EGR Blocking bolt - Free (hook up) You could also just upgrade to the new style EGR if you wanted, blocking it off is cheaper IIRC thats the basics, I havent done the swap yet as the trans I got has a dented pan so I need to replace that. Im also getting a shift kit (machined valve body) $300, a 2 spring LSD $450 and a set of 3.69 gears $400. The trans upgrades are pricey so I have to buy them as I get the money. I should have it all together and ready to swap sometime this winter.
