cutlass88
Hi, what kind of steering fluid use the 1988 cutlass supr. sl?
sl3196
I'm guessing your asking what kind to use? I would just go get some from Wal-Mart or where ever. I used prestone in mine.
Robby1870
Yeah....its just Transmission fluid
93CutlassSupreme
why not just use the correct POWER STEERING FLUID?
EurosportZ34
I have a leak in a couple PowerSteering hoses, so currently I'm dumping in more fluid when it gets low. I'm using Valvoline Max Life with stop leak.
93CutlassSupreme
no offense, but i am not cheap when it comes to my car. it is the only car i have, i like it, i would like to keep it for a long time, and i don't have money to buy another car if i bust mine up. if my owner's manual, service manual, and the damn cap on the power steering resovior says to use only power steering fluid, i'll pay 5 dollars for the correct fluid. even if the two fluids are identical, with only a label change, at least i have the piece of mind knowing i used POWER STEERING FLUID where it is supposted to be used, instead of AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID DEXTRON III. Robby1870
HA! Wow.....and thats why they sell bottles of that stuff. Lemme guess...synthetic motor oil and premium gas too! I have piece of mind knowing I DONT listen to the owner's manual
93CutlassSupreme
please do not take me for a fool........i may be a young 18 years old, but i am not stupid synthetic motor oil? my driving habits prevent me from gaining any benefits synthetic motor oil provides premium gas? the totally stock nature of my engine prevents me from needing the higher octane rating of premium gas once again, if General Motors wanted me to use trans fluid in my power steering system, they would say so. for some reason, they suggest power steering fluid instead of trans fluid, so i will use power steering fluid. make fun of me if you want, i really don't care. at least i know i am above you in one respect, knowing i respect the opinions of others, especially when it comes to the care of their cars, unlike you. gp90se
dex and p/s are different in that they have different additives, the p/s fluid helps prevent leaks, tranny fluid is designed to prevent from foaming. you can safely use ATF3 in a GM p/s box, but using the p/s fluid is much better for the system as well as help preventing leaks. -Jeff

I was totally joking with that comment, I was just trying to get a rise out of you....and I did and you gave a good response. Now I know I can believe stuff you post, unlike a lot of people on here. Thats fucked up, but ne ways power steering fluid is clear while ATF fluid is red. But at Wal-mart its like .78 cents and cheap, and about the synthetic fluid it is really good for the engine, and it does have benefits. Bolt_Crank
synthetic oil can last longer, but is NOT worth it if the majority of your trips are short. I run synthetic in my car because 95% of the time it runs for a minimum of 2 hours other than that, there's no real difference in the two... synthetic has some chemicals in it that need to get to certain temps for proper use... I think, anyway, it's been awhile since I looked it up.... all I know is that I beat on my car for hours at a time and it doesn't burn oil
93CutlassSupreme
alright robby, let's say we're even now
GnatGoSplat
I've had plenty of p/s fluid leaks so I was paranoid when I bought my new pump. I had to seek out a p/s fluid that claimed to meet the GM p/n printed in the manual. I thought about using ATF, but like 93CutlassSupreme says, the manual doesn't say you can substitute ATF. The manual for my old Mercury on the other hand, did say you could sub ATF. I just didn't want to take the chance with the seals in my Cutlass. Bolt_Crank
most newer PS pumps are different... that, or companies just wanna make more money by charging more for a specialty product... I haven't figured it out yet I just grab whatever is closest.... or at least, I will when my PS level goes down
joey b
synthetic is best in engines that get hot because it doesn't break down like regular oil, thus resulting in a sustained viscosity and a lack of carbon buidup.
92turboLE
there's no real difference in the two... synthetic has some chemicals in it that need to get to certain temps for proper use... I think, anyway I beg to differ with you on that one... i know this from personal experience... if you have 2 cars that are brand new, run one with synthetic and the other with convetional oil for a few thousand miles... then look under the hoods... the car with synthetic for the most part will be clean and the car without will be well, clean too but njot as clean... Synthetic really doesnt break down like conventional oil does. When conventional oil breaks down is releases gasses that they cake on to the surfaces of your motor, which in turn alloow dirt and particals to stick to the surfaces of the motor... i have run syntetics in my car since the day i got it and according to the ecords (my car is an ex cop car so i have a 2 inch thick book of maintenance records, down to every oil change) it has had synthetic in it since new... i can simply run a hose under my hood and the fuckin thing looks like it just rolled off the production line. try that with a car that has 240K miles of cenventional oil use. Im just a die hard user of synthetics... particularly mobile1. $60 for a filter and oil change is kinda steep, but i have taken my car 10K+ miles on one oil change (did change filters every 3K though) and the oil came out of the car lookin like it did when it was put in. just my $0.02 though - Justin
92turboLE
on another note... as far as power steering is concerned (and this info comes from GM) it is not recamended that you use ATF as a replacement as ATF has certain detergents in it that are harmful to the P/S components and particularly the P/S lines and hoses. The hoses, if ran with ATF, will start to deteriorate and eventualy crack/break/leak. Many ford and Chrysler vehicles, however, do say that you can run ATF as a replacement. The systems were designed for the different detergents and can handle them without a problem, buit NOT recamended in GM cars. correct me if i am wrong, but tat is direct form GM. on a side note though... you can also add a little bit of ATF to your engine oil and it acts as a GREAT detergent. Not recamended for higher mileage cars with minor leaks as the detergents could break away some of th gunk blokin such leaks. - Justin
GnatGoSplat
I think ATF also has some abrasive in it. I've read that you should never use ATF in a hydraulic system as it has additives that give it an abrasive quality and will wear down hydraulic system components. If that's true, I don't think it would be a good idea to use it in a power steering system.

I run Mobil 1 in my car and it's only like $40 Canadian for 7L of oil and the filter (AC Delco brand)
92turboLE
yeah, its about $6.50 US a quart here, so thats nearly $40 for the oil alone, then add another $10 or so for filter... but i use K&N oil filters... so i was a little off but close enough... - Justin
Bolt_Crank
it's like $7.12 a quart/litre here... $25.87 for a 4 quart jug...
