99RegalGS Posted February 23, 2004 Report Posted February 23, 2004 Today when I went to go to my friend's house I noticed that if I reved my car kinda quickly it would miss maybe once or twice then act like normal. So I was thinking that maybe a spark plug, or wire is going bad or somthing. Then a couple minutes later I opened it up a little and noticed that once the engine hit 4,000 rpm it surged and pulled noticably more. Now I have no clue what's causing this? On the way home the same thing happened again. Do you guys have any ideas? Quote
MaroonRegal Posted February 23, 2004 Report Posted February 23, 2004 Maybe some unusual change in the intake of air? Quote
mfewtrail Posted February 23, 2004 Report Posted February 23, 2004 Sounds like a spark plug/wire going bad and showing up under heavy engine load. Be sure to do a good visual inspection first before you start testing things, don't overlook the simple stuff. Quote
99RegalGS Posted February 23, 2004 Author Report Posted February 23, 2004 I'll quickly look over the wires today. I probably won't be able to pull the plugs untill friday. Quote
99RegalGS Posted February 23, 2004 Author Report Posted February 23, 2004 Well, I just went to go back to school and it was running really bad. So bad that I turned around and went back home. You can feel it miss badly once the torque converter locks up. I'm going to pull the plugs and wires now to look at them. Quote
maybe2fast Posted February 23, 2004 Report Posted February 23, 2004 check the coils for cracks or anything bad under load they could be acting up Quote
99RegalGS Posted February 23, 2004 Author Report Posted February 23, 2004 check the coils for cracks or anything bad under load they could be acting up I'll check the coils too. I got the front 3 out and the outer electrodes on all of them are covered with a coating of white ash. and #1 plug has some carbon build up also. Here's 2 pictures of the #1 sparkplug. Quote
Baddflash Posted February 24, 2004 Report Posted February 24, 2004 What about the fuel filter or a plugged up line? Possibly pressure regulator. Quote
99RegalGS Posted February 24, 2004 Author Report Posted February 24, 2004 What about the fuel filter or a plugged up line? Possibly pressure regulator. I changed the fuel filter last october. How can you check the pressure regaulator? I did look at the coils and there wern't any cracks in them. I'm switching cars with my dad for the week so maybe he can come up with some ideas. Quote
joey b Posted February 24, 2004 Report Posted February 24, 2004 you got it. Check plugs and wires. Then check out the coil packs and the ICM. If it is intermittent I would say say check the plugs and wires cause it's easy. Then on to the ICM. I have never had a coil pack work intermittently. Quote
mfewtrail Posted February 24, 2004 Report Posted February 24, 2004 I have never had a coil pack work intermittently. On my parents GTP, the car had a slight misfire and a SES light came on for a few seconds one day and stalled, afterwards, the car started back up and ran fine. About a month later, the car started missing badly at idle and would run for a few minutes before stalling w/ no SES light..turns out the middle coilpack on the ICM module was bad/going bad(the one for cylinders 2&5). Replaced the coilpack and the car ran like a champ. Quote
99RegalGS Posted February 25, 2004 Author Report Posted February 25, 2004 Well yesterday when my dad drive it he said it ran fine. :? I might pull off the coils this weekend and test them. Quote
SleeperRed90TGp Posted February 25, 2004 Report Posted February 25, 2004 Your dad proly didn't get on it as hard as you do so he didn't get it to miss. Sounds like a coil. Ohm testing won't prove a coil is bad cuse they usually brake down when they get hot. Get one known good coil(maby off your dad's car if its the same type) and replace one coil at a time to find the bad one. I have been through 7 or 8 coils and they all acted as you describe. Bless autzone and ther life time warrenty, I only paid for one. Jud Quote
99RegalGS Posted February 25, 2004 Author Report Posted February 25, 2004 Your dad proly didn't get on it as hard as you do so he didn't get it to miss. Yeah probably, but it would also miss at low rpm's. Jud Yeah, my dad's car is a 94 corsica w/ a 3100. I'll take the coils off of it this weekend and try them on my car. I also did talk to the Service Manager at the Dealer I work at today and he said that the ohm reading on the coils should be from 10-12 ohms. He also said I can check my wires by having someone putting a load on the engine and me taking a small spray bottle and spraying the wires, and then look for arcs. Quote
SleeperRed90TGp Posted February 25, 2004 Report Posted February 25, 2004 quote] Yeah probably, but it would also miss at low rpm's. Don't know who told you that but there absolutely wrong. A coil can go bad from idle to wot. They usually rear there ugly face under full load in the mid rpm range. I have had them go bad from idle to wot. If there bad at idle they will be bad through the whole rpm band. I had two cylinders out at idle on a trip 1k miles from home to just a skip or surge when at wot in passing gear. Oh! don't replace all the coils, just do one at a time or you will never know which one was bad. Good luck, I hope this helps you out. Jud Quote
99RegalGS Posted February 25, 2004 Author Report Posted February 25, 2004 Don't know who told you that but there absolutelywrong. I'm sorry I wrote that wrong. I ment my car also misses at lower rpm's. Like when I'm at 1,300rpm when crusing with load the car will miss. Don't replace all the coils, just do one at a time or you will never know which one was bad. Yeah, I'll do that. Thanks for all your help. Quote
99RegalGS Posted February 29, 2004 Author Report Posted February 29, 2004 Ok never got a chance to change coils today (dad had to work). I did open the hood tonight and what a light show. I the #1/#4 coil was arcing between the posts and the #1 spark plug wire was arching to the fan motor cover, the #2,4,6 wires would glow when I would rev the engine. and the #1 plug looked like it was arcing all the where it touched the block. There was some other misc arcing around also. Tomorrow I'm going to pull the #1/#4 coil and imspect it closely and pull #1 wire further away from the fan cover. Quote
joey b Posted February 29, 2004 Report Posted February 29, 2004 wires that glow when you rev the engine. Now there's a mod Quote
SleeperRed90TGp Posted March 1, 2004 Report Posted March 1, 2004 Yea but not one that you want. It happens to offen. Jud Quote
99RegalGS Posted March 1, 2004 Author Report Posted March 1, 2004 I'm getting new wires on friday. I hope that fixes it. Quote
99RegalGS Posted March 3, 2004 Author Report Posted March 3, 2004 Got new wires today. Man what a difference. The car so much more power than it did before I put them on. I'll update you guys on friday to see how it runs on my 2.5 hr trip home. Quote
