ikessky Posted February 16, 2004 Report Posted February 16, 2004 Okay, I have a 2001 Century and it really needs new tires. I called around looking for a cheaper tire and found a couple good choices. I'm having trouble deciding, so maybe you guys can help me out. Here they are: Goodyear Viva 2 (Wal-Mart tires) - $258.88 60,000 tire Firestone FR 380 - $195.80 55,000 mile tire Bridgestone Insignia - $239.80 65,000 mile tire So, do you have any words of wisdom on these three tires? jeremy Posted February 16, 2004 Report Posted February 16, 2004 my opinion is as follows :I wouldn't spend that kind of $ per tire unless I was buying some 17"-19" rubber for a sports car.... Quote
ikessky Posted February 16, 2004 Author Report Posted February 16, 2004 I guess I should have put this in there. That is for mounting, balancing, and everything on 4 tires (205/70-15). Sorry! Quote
89oldscutlass Posted February 16, 2004 Report Posted February 16, 2004 I have Firestone Indy Firehawks on both my Cutlass Supremes. They seem to have a longer tire life then some of the other tires I have had on them. For no more then the price difference I would bump up to the Firehawks if you go with Firestone. Quote
EurosportZ34 Posted February 16, 2004 Report Posted February 16, 2004 Not sure on those kinds. I have Goodyear and BF Goodrich on my Luminas. They both are very good and I'd recommend them to anyone looking for tires. The BF Goodrich Traction T/A's that I got on my Z34 are excellent. Pry the best on the market in my opinion. They are BF Goodrich's new line of tires. I got the VR speedrated tires and they handle the best I've ever had. Quote
Baddflash Posted February 17, 2004 Report Posted February 17, 2004 I have Michelins and although they're expensive they are excellent tires. Quote
Thabulldog Posted February 17, 2004 Report Posted February 17, 2004 I have Continental ContiTouring I think are the name on the front. They are absolutely great in the snow and rain as well as dry traction and REALLY good handling. 95 bucks a tire for 16's though. Quote
rudefyet Posted February 17, 2004 Report Posted February 17, 2004 believe it or not the Kellys on my GP right now are the best damn tires i've ever owned Quote
rudefyet Posted February 17, 2004 Report Posted February 17, 2004 Kelly Charger = exactly what i have Quote
Z34door Posted February 17, 2004 Report Posted February 17, 2004 toyo Proxes FZE............ great cornering ability. it tends to understeer less Quote
digitaloutsider Posted February 17, 2004 Report Posted February 17, 2004 Which tire should I get? I prefer the round, rubber kind. Quote
Guest TurboSedan Posted February 17, 2004 Report Posted February 17, 2004 Goodyear Viva 2 (Wal-Mart tires) - $258.88 60,000 tire i have Goodyear Viva Touring on the front of my Cutlass right now and so far i like them. they are 225/60-16's and were $60-something per tire from the Super Wal-Mart about a year ago. i need to get two more for the rear very soon and will probably get Viva 2's this time since they are a little cheaper. i may just get 4 new 225/55's instead tho, but it would probably be a performance oriented tire from tirerack.com joshua Quote
ikessky Posted February 17, 2004 Author Report Posted February 17, 2004 I prefer the round, rubber kind. Rubber is not available in my area. That's probably why we have two kids! Seriously though, I'm going to go with the Bridgestone Insignia's. Quote
cutsup1996 Posted February 17, 2004 Report Posted February 17, 2004 ya get what u pay for, especially with tires. I love mine, Michellin Pilot XGT H4's 225/60/16. got em' at sams club for total labor and tires to about $550, they are so damn good, low noise, great traction in anything, hook up like no other, feel is great, I highly recommend, and 400 treadwear is not bad for what this tire does. Quote
EurosportZ34 Posted February 17, 2004 Report Posted February 17, 2004 Rubber is not available in my area. That's probably why we have two kids! Now back to the subject...you need to stick with the brand names. Remember you get what you pay for no matter what! Quote
cutsup1996 Posted February 17, 2004 Report Posted February 17, 2004 is there an echo in the room? Quote
Black90Euro Posted February 20, 2004 Report Posted February 20, 2004 225/60-ZR16 Futura Ultra-Z PepBoys , very sticky and Z rated Quote
cutsup1996 Posted February 20, 2004 Report Posted February 20, 2004 futuras are cheap and suck but it's your money Quote
Black90Euro Posted February 20, 2004 Report Posted February 20, 2004 futuras are cheap and suck but it's your money not in my experience so far Quote
z34_nut Posted February 20, 2004 Report Posted February 20, 2004 i got the cheapest tires my local tire-wharehouse had. to be honest i've had worriors on it for 25,000 miles and shit, i'll tell you, they still look brand new. Quote
jamcneely Posted February 20, 2004 Report Posted February 20, 2004 Well, I work at a tire shop, so I guess I might be able to help. In my opinion the Firestone FR 380 - $195.80 55,000 mile tire would be the best choice for the price compared to mileage waranty and they're going to last just as long as the other two chocies. Even thought the milage warantys are diff. I just need to say Z34door thats a very good choice on the Toyo Proxes, best performance tire out there! Also, EurosportZ34 your idiot! You don't need to stick with brand names, you usually just get ripped off, when you talking passenger tires that way. The Brand names also make the no names, and there is no incentive for them to make a worse tire. They're just trying to pick up additional sells in a lower price bracket. The tread faces may be a little different, but the caseing, which is the most important part is the exact same, and so is the rubber density. So they are going to wear and last the same. Sorry to hear you got screwed there Eurosport. Quote
chevanater Posted February 20, 2004 Report Posted February 20, 2004 I'd check out discounttiredirect.com you can get some VERY nice tires for < $100 each and mounting and balancing should only be $40-$50. Quote

Sorry to hear you got screwed there Eurosport. Babble, babble, babble...newbie post. I'm sure the Z-rated Toyo tires are good but that is only for summer driving. Now living in Wisconsin I'm positive that you would not want only summer tires on your car. The MC S/C SS and the Impala SS come with Goodyear Eagle RS-A WR tires because they are all season high-performance. You would think that Chevy would put Z-rated on them since they are the top of the line, but not everyone lives in the southern USA with no snow. Quote
jamcneely Posted February 21, 2004 Report Posted February 21, 2004 Why don't you stay on the subject Eurosprot? I never said that the Toyos were meant for winter driving. I was just saying that one doesn't have to stick with brand names the get a good tire. In fact more often than not the brand name is what you are paying for. Oh, and I didn't know that amount of replys you post or the amount time you spend on this site, makes you know more about what the hell you are talking about. I might be a newbie on here, but I do know Tires. Also, thanks for the complete reason as to why Chevy doesn't put Z rated tires on the Impala SS and the MC S/C SS, even though no one asked for it, and its a "no brainer" to most. But I'm the one that Babbles, babbles, babbles right? Quote
