rudefyet Posted February 11, 2004 Report Posted February 11, 2004 No this is not a racing topic!! um i was wondering if any of you gurus knew some stuff about the 2 gen w-body GPs and Regals I'm debating on which to get since i have a pretty decent job now...i'm looking at a 97 GTP or GS with the L67 (3800 S/C) 1st... Is there any performace difference between the two...i noticed the buick has a different torque rating then the GTP 2nd... Does the buick has a HUD and/or a DIC 3rd... Insurance wise, which is cheaper (I assume the buick)...also i heard the 97 GTP is recognized as a GT with the GTP package...making it cheaper then the newer one's is that true? All In all i'm liking the looks of me driving a Regal...maybe change the rims and add a more free flowing exhaust and i'm in love Quote
GnatGoSplat Posted February 11, 2004 Report Posted February 11, 2004 There's a dark blue Regal GS I see fairly often with 18" aftermarket wheels on it. It actually looks nicer than a GTP, IMO. A Regal will be more unique and less common. Quote
jeremy Posted February 11, 2004 Report Posted February 11, 2004 A Regal will be more unique and less common. you read my mind.... Quote
MaroonRegal Posted February 11, 2004 Report Posted February 11, 2004 It's all about preference. The only difference in the drivetrain is that some of the later models (maybe 2002+) of Grand Prix got a more powerful blower, giving them an extra 20 horsepower. No Regals got HUDs, sorry. But at least one person, and maybe two or three people, over at http://www.regalgs.org have added a HUD to their Regals. If you like coupes, you have to choose the GP. If you like a good paint scheme, some of the Regals have an incredibly badass two-tone thing going on. If you care about the internet community, http://www.regalgs.org is more sophisticated than http://www.clubGP.com, as far as I can tell. Of course, you'll still be welcome here, seeing as they're w-bodies, so maybe it doesn't matter. Both cars are very similar, just take you pick. Quote
rudefyet Posted February 11, 2004 Author Report Posted February 11, 2004 A Regal will be more unique and less common. you read my mind.... that the exact reason i want one Thanks MaroonRegal for the info...You just reassured that the Regal is what i want...i'll live without a HUD for now Any word on the insurance though? slick Posted February 11, 2004 Report Posted February 11, 2004 I would imagine that the GS's insurance would be cheaper than the GTP's, mainly because it is a Buick Regal. I have a question about the gen II's differences too. Is there any difference in ride quality? I would imagine that the GS's is much better, but cannot handle as well as the GTP's, but I could be wrong. Personally, I would get a GS. I think there damn sexy, and the 2 tone paint is awesome! WhiteOut Posted February 11, 2004 Report Posted February 11, 2004 The GS has a much softer ride than the GTP. Even with the Gran Touring II Suspension package the Regal is noticably more ponderous through the corners. Your correct to assume that the GS has lower insurance. If you can you may want to find a 98' or 99' LSE model Regal with a blower on it, the insurance will be even less then. Most GS model buicks are equipped with a DIC witch sits in the IPC, not the most fun but still functional. The build quality in both model's isn't exactly what you would call stunning. The first year or two they must have been ironing out the wrinkles in the car's interiors because if you sit in a 96.5-97' GS or 97-98' GTP there's a noticable differance in quality as far as materials go when compared to a 2000 or later model. Its all personal preference I guess. Personally I'd go with the Buick, I like the extra features and the power, don't get me wrong speeding around corners is great fun, but its less important to me than a sweet ride overall. Quote
GnatGoSplat Posted February 11, 2004 Report Posted February 11, 2004 Get Eibach lowering springs, or whatever the latest and coolest springs they're using on the GTP is, and it will out-handle a stock GTP. I really like the 2-tone too. It looks nice, especially with black upper body and the dark gray lower body. Plus, I think the Regal body shape is nicer to begin with. The GP NEEDS a spoiler for the ass-end to look good. The Regal doesn't. Quote
J Posted February 11, 2004 Report Posted February 11, 2004 my womans dad use dto have a gs and i loved that car so much, you dont see many of hte gs's around here compared to the buttloads of gtp's. the interior is nicer if u want luxury and the thing is you have both worlds, speed and luxury and u can suprise a lot more people with the gs. GET THE GS Quote
Guest TurboSedan Posted February 11, 2004 Report Posted February 11, 2004 the thing is you have both worlds, speed and luxury and u can suprise a lot more people with the gs. GET THE GS Regal all the way. joshua Quote
slick Posted February 11, 2004 Report Posted February 11, 2004 Thats what I figured about the GS's ride and insurance. Shawn, the black 2-tone does kick ass! I want a white upper body with a dark grey lower body. I seriously think that would look soo damn nice. Quote

slick Posted February 11, 2004 Report Posted February 11, 2004 Exactly as I put it!!!?!?!?!!? Man, what did they do with it!!! Quote
99RegalGS Posted February 11, 2004 Report Posted February 11, 2004 I would love to get a 97+ Regal. I actually was looking into getting a 99 GS before I even got my licence, but then I realized there was not way I was going to be able to afford one. It's kinda ironic that I ended up getting a 93 GS insted. I guess the HUD isn't that bad of an install since the GP HUD dashpad fits the Regal dash almost perfectly. Quote
Steve LS Posted February 11, 2004 Report Posted February 11, 2004 Wow Its a Regal shutout ! I am surprised, I figured the Buick was gonna get a bashin. Now get this, me Mr Buick Olds likes the GP the best from a styling point of view. My favorite is the GP without the upper grill, Aurora style nose.. Which model is that ? I know that one doesnt come with L67. Of the 3 BOP's I'd take the Intrigue actually, just cause it stands alone. I already bought my 4dr. L67 car. I like the Riviera best but not for the family. I know your gonna be proud of a Regal. 8) Quote

mfewtrail Posted February 12, 2004 Report Posted February 12, 2004 Get a GTP, much more aftermarket available(in terms on performance and styling). 8) Quote
Guest TurboSedan Posted February 12, 2004 Report Posted February 12, 2004 styling maybe, but performance? wouldn't they be the same in terms of performance? joshua Quote
mfewtrail Posted February 12, 2004 Report Posted February 12, 2004 styling maybe, but performance? wouldn't they be the same in terms of performance?joshua That's why I put styling, also, I don't think EVERY performance part for a GTP is interchangeable(as a direct bolt-on), so my post still stands. pblunt_ Posted February 12, 2004 Report Posted February 12, 2004 Noramlly I'd say get GTP, but GPs are getting old real fast. I'll cast my vote for a rare Regal GSE, much nicer interior than Regal GS and GTP. Quote

Also why I prefer Camaros to Firebirds, ect. The first gen W GP was nicely done and not in your face. Grand Am's are the epitomy of what I dont like in grill work, that and the Eldorado Barritz grill, same effect. I have the same problem with 68/69 Toronado. Just dont like protruding over done grills. GP's a beauty elsewise. What engines came in those 97-99 SE's ? Quote

99RegalGS Posted February 12, 2004 Report Posted February 12, 2004 The base engine in the SE was the 3100. Quote

Just by word of mouth I can tell that for the most part, they alienate the first gen GP people, and pretty much all other w-body owners. This is the more sophistocated crowd, hands down. Quote
slick Posted February 12, 2004 Report Posted February 12, 2004 I'm gonna be looking out for a GS at the auctions, maybe I can come across one at a good price. Quote
