Baddflash
Hey all, after a year of searching I finally found a 5-spd donor in a 89' Grand Prix. I got everything I needed (almost) but I left the transmission cause it didn't seem to shift well (hard to explain), and the car appeared to be stolen. The car appeared to be in good shape so I think the thieves may have abused it too much and broke something I don't know the Kms cause the dash was gone, guessing I would say around 200,000Kms. I heard some talk that the w-body tranny may be different from say a sunbird's or cavi's or corsica has anyone figured this out? Would it just be the intermediate shaft thats different and would there be any sense in grabbing just that or the few parts that may differ? I grabbed the shifter and cables, the clutch pedal, sensor and master/slave setup, brake pedal and vaccum switch, I forgot the neutral safety switch or what ever it's called. I wasn't sure what else to grab. I'm just going to modify the auto harness, the ecm was gone as was the entire interior which was perfect for me. I'm sure I'm forgetting stuff but if anyone can think of anything I might need to grab bracket, sensor whatever please let me know ASAP, doubt that it'll be there long, thanks. Yes I have spent hours searching!!!!!!
Guest TurboSedan
if the axles are good you should grab those too! you'll need the flywheel of course...if you can get to it. i have heard the intermediate shaft is different also - i would get that too. it's not hard to pull. i've heard the other 282's have a slip in intermediate shaft, but that's just what i've heard. the W-body 282 has an intermediate shaft with 3 bolts that hold it to the tranny and you can be sure it is the right length if it's from a W-body. i have in intermediate shaft from a '90 GP for sale also and i'd give it to you cheap. otherwise it sounds like you got everything you need, besides the tranny itself. if you can get the tranny out i would grab the V6 bellhousing just in case you find a Getrag 282 from a HO Quad-4 car (better gearing)....unless the bellhousing is trashed of course. get a new tranny mount, new clutch, resurface the flywheel, and 3qts of Syncromesh and you should be good to go. btw, did you have fun pulling the clutch pedal out? i sure did good luck joshua
Baddflash
Yes the clutch pedal sucks to remove, I don't like the idea of installing it. I think I'll buy new axles and flywheel aswell as what you mentioned. I still need new front seats and console plus an ton of little things I want to change at the same time. Any idea on what a complete rebuild would be? I can get the tranny for like $75 cdn , I almost think I should get it anyway and have it rebuilt depending on cost. I haven't really looked for a used one cause this place is dirt cheap, I payed $50 for a complete 3100 out of a wrecked 97' cutty, it cost me $30 for all the stuff I listed plus a set of chrome exhaust tips. Phantom GTZ
Make sure you buy a 92+ quad 4 trans if at all possible. It has better gearing. especially if you can find a w41 tranny (rare), it has a better final drive for gas mileage.
