okidedrak Posted February 9, 2004 Report Posted February 9, 2004 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=33576&item=2458302751 88-91 dont have the same starters as 91+ from what i've seen but I've seen people on this forum putting in 3100 starters from 97+ malibus. Will this starter bolt on the the 2.8l? Thanks guys Quote
gmrulz4u Posted February 9, 2004 Report Posted February 9, 2004 I don't think it will work on the 2.8L engines... AC Delco's website shows that 3 different Starters will work, and none of them are the part numbers shown on that eBay item. The GM Part #'s for the 3 that WILL work are: 10462394 10495397 10465034 The eBay one is: 10465098 I'm 99% sure...maybe someone can prove me wrong?? Quote
okidedrak Posted February 9, 2004 Author Report Posted February 9, 2004 Different part #s doesnt mean they dont fit or work in other applications. It just means they werent specifically intended for that app. The 2.8 is not in question because the same starter is for the 3.1 up until 91. Also we all know all 3.1s are pretty much identical except that they improved some parts, maybe the starter is just an improvement, it does not mean it wont bolt with an older block and work with its flywheel. I'm looking mostly for an answer fom someone who had direct experience with these things or heard of something liek this being done, again part#s dont tell teh whole story. Thanks for replying tho, opinions are always welcome. Quote
Guest TurboSedan Posted February 9, 2004 Report Posted February 9, 2004 i believe it was Curtis Walker that used a starter from a '97 Malibu on his '90 TGP block. i think his username is TurboZ24. if it works on a GEN-II 3.1 i don't see why it wouldn't work on a 2.8. joshua Quote
okidedrak Posted February 9, 2004 Author Report Posted February 9, 2004 problem is the starter on ebay is not the malibu one, if it were i wouldve bought it in a sec, this is mainly a 92-96 one for the 3.1 Quote
okidedrak Posted February 12, 2004 Author Report Posted February 12, 2004 For the records, I went to teh autoparts store put the 2 starters side by side 88-90 and 91+ and teh only real difference that could cause a problem is the fact that the nose on the 91+ is 1/4 inch longer, it migth be somethign or just that the old style was too long for nothing. Otherwise it looks like the newer style is designed better , more waterproof and smaller solenoid. I could not afford to try it out because i had to drive 50km to replace it and outside at -10C. It was the first time i worked outside and the last. Quote
