GP1138 Posted February 1, 2004 Report Posted February 1, 2004 Well, I have a transmission problem. I have the 440T4/4T60 coupled with the 2.8. Here's the problem. This is on a fully warmed - up engine, in freezing temperatures. It just started doing this. I put some tranny fluid in (~5 qt, I was really low, it was not shifting like it was supposed to, and I usually overfill a Qt. or two, to be sure) and I got back out on the road, and I'm in first. Moderate throttle, it gets to around the shift point, and sticks. I can hear the engine whining like if I forgot to shift a manual, losing power. I gun it, and it shifts like it normally does at WOT, nice and firm. In second. Now it won't shift into third. I'm not gunning it to shift into third, I don't need another ticket. However, it REFUSES to shift into third unless I gun it. When I slow and stop, it's shifted back into first, just like it's supposed to, and I can take off normally, but again, same thing. I noticed today that my gas pedal seems to be a little looser, as well. I thought this might be the kickdown cable stuck at WOT, therefore it requires high RPM's to shift. Either that, or I really fucked up my tranny. Help! Quote
Dan94Z34 Posted February 1, 2004 Report Posted February 1, 2004 overfilling a tranny can cause shifting problems, and possibably damage it in the process. since you were 5 quarts? low on tranny oil you also could of cooked the clutches. Quote
GP1138 Posted February 1, 2004 Author Report Posted February 1, 2004 Update: I do think it's a broken cable, but let me run this by you. The topmost cable, that goes through the black grommet, I think there might be a problem with it. That part of the cable pulls right through and stays there. If I pull it out all the way, it kind of bogs the motor down some. What exactly does this cable do, and could it be a problem? I've pretty much verified the problem isn't clutches or anything, since if I gun the motor and it reaches 6500 RPM in first it'll shift fine, firm, normal. If I use the throttle normally, it won't shift. Think of driving a 5 speed and leaving it in first, running at around 5500, you can flip the pedal and jerk the car. If I don't firewall the throttle, it'll shift at around 6000, but it still takes forever from a complete stop, and it's shitty for gas mileage, not to mention horrible on the transmission. Might I have to replace a cable? Any ideas, comments, etc are appreciated. John Quote
joey b Posted February 1, 2004 Report Posted February 1, 2004 WD-40 oil everything that has to do with then necessary free movement of that cable. Quote
GP1138 Posted February 1, 2004 Author Report Posted February 1, 2004 Could that be my problem? Is that the kickdown cable? Quote
joey b Posted February 1, 2004 Report Posted February 1, 2004 I dunno but if that is supposed to move freely and it doesn't then that is gonna need to be fixed anyway. Quote
GP1138 Posted February 1, 2004 Author Report Posted February 1, 2004 Well, I just drove down to the radio station I announce at on Sunday nights, WDPR. It's about 5-10 or so miles from my house, I'd say. I took a state route (US-35) down here, interstate speeds, hovering around 65. Spent the entire time in 2nd gear, around 5500-6000 RPM's. With blinking one bar/no bars of gas('89-'90 Grand Prix people you know what I'm talking about). I got stuck behind a stupid Honda and couldn't gun the engine, so I couldn't upshift, and every time I let off the gas I could feel the engine braking because my revs were so high. I was afraid I was going to hurt my transmission. Can anyone help me? I don't think that cable is going to lube, it feels like something is sticking inside that solenoid. It goes down right behind where the plenum extends. In other words, TTT! Quote
GP1138 Posted February 2, 2004 Author Report Posted February 2, 2004 Nobody has any advice/ideas? Sorry to be a pest but I need some help here. Quote
4spdz34 Posted February 2, 2004 Report Posted February 2, 2004 right behind the intake there is a adjustment for it. the cable is called a d-tent cable. u push in on the button and then move the throttle to wot. of course do this wth the engine off. it may take a little while to find the button but it should be about 2 inchs under the map sensor Quote
maybe2fast Posted February 2, 2004 Report Posted February 2, 2004 metal cables will stretch with age the ajustment will help Quote
GP1138 Posted February 2, 2004 Author Report Posted February 2, 2004 I think that might be my problem. I've found some good info, and I've looked on the cable housing for the button, but I can't find it. Where on the mounting would it be? Top or bottom? Sides? I might take the EGR off temporarily, but I don't have a new EGR gasket to put on. Any more detail would be helpful. Thanks so far, I think I'm getting closer. Quote
