Replaced the fuel pump on my 91 and ever since it has been stalling when I come to a stop,it idles fine when its warming up,but as soon as I start driving around it idles very low/stalling.It also takes a little longer to start when it's cold outside to.Before I had to replace the pump I never had any of these problems.Any ideas? Thanks.I forgot to mention that the car sat for 3 months before I got around to doing it if that makes any difference.

I had the same problem with my 1991 Grand Prix. I had to put a fuel pump in it and it would stall at red lights, but run fine when you were crusing. I had to reset the ECM. On our cars the idle needs to be reset when there is any loss of power to the ECM for a significant amount of time, like when you have to disconnect the battery to change the fuel pump. My 1989 Cutlass does this even if you have to change the battery.

The procedure you need to perform is called "Idle Relearn" And here is how you do it.

(1) Pull the fuse in your fuse panel that is inside the car that is labled "ECM".

(2) Leave it out for at least 15 minutes. This allows the computer to reset.

(3) Put the fuse back in, and crank the car. Rest your foot on the throttle, just enough to maintain a smooth idle. If it idles a little high, it will still work, but try to keep it as close to regular idle as you can.

(4) Cut the engine off and do the same thing that you had to do in number 3 again.

That should reset the idle on your car. :)

You may have to do it twice, but the first time usually does it.

As far as the car sitting up, my Grand Prix had done the same thing and I had to run a few bottles of injection cleaner through it and it finally ran smoothly. Someone had traded the car at the lot, and they told me that the prior owner had said that it had been sitting dormant for a few months.

Perform the idle relearn, and run a few bottles of injection cleaner through it, and she should be just fine.

Hope this helps.
