Gearhead43 Posted January 31, 2004 Report Posted January 31, 2004 Alright guys.... A bunch of you probably already changed these shitty door handles before. But before you go out there a buy one off eBay or a Generic part, read below. If you have the security lighting (SL) option, the generic handles are GOING to require some modification to work with the SL. You must first trim the area inside the keyhole so that the light ring will fit right, then you must make a slot in the door handle's metal actuator for the SL light trip switch using a drill bit and a dremel cutting wheel. You can use your old handle as a size guide. Otherwise it's pretty easy to change door handles. 8) Start by opening the door and removing the inside tirm piece, One 15 mm Nut and one phillips screw. Now you'll see the door control rods. One for the lock and one for the door catch. Remove the lock cylinder retainer and lock cylinder - one star bolt Remove the lock rod clip retainer and pull the lock off. Remove the door catch rod clip retainer, noting where the screw eye sits on the rod. Remove two 7/32 screws that hold the SL acutator on the hood handle. Remove the lower inside phillps screw and the upper 15mm Nut. Pull the old handle assembly off the door. Installation is reverse of removal One note about re-installing: Put the lock rod back on the lock BEFORE bolting the lock back in. Before adding the actuator rod cover back on, shut and test door for proper handle operation. If handle fails to open door, the screw eye on the door catch rod needs to be adjusted by screwing it UPWARD on the rod. This will give the rod MORE downward travel to open the door correctly. Once it is adjusted, you can add the cover. Then you are finished[/img] Quote
digitaloutsider Posted January 31, 2004 Report Posted January 31, 2004 Now if you could only figure out a way to fix the linkage on my driver door Quote
Gearhead43 Posted January 31, 2004 Author Report Posted January 31, 2004 Shaun, The 4 doors are a bit different.... Its possible that the linkage rod became dissconected inside the door panel. I'll have to look at it one day I go down there. Let me know what GP"s you find in that junkyard today!!!! Quote
digitaloutsider Posted January 31, 2004 Report Posted January 31, 2004 It DID become disconnected, I just can't figure out where it goes. Stupid GM door handles.. Quote
