3.1 to 3.4 DOHC swap?

I was tinkering with the idea of that. What would it take to pull it off, and is there anything extremely difficult about it? Don't get me wrong, I like my 3.1, but I'm looking for a little extra power.

awww shit i just went to go look it up on the 60* site and remembered it was on the GMF server and that fuckhole wouldnt let ben get any of our posts off before he dumped everything.

i had it all spilled out in one long post, with pics, parts, part #'s, every single thing that needed done in order as i wrote up the post as i was doing the swap.

tell me what year your car is i will tell you what you need to do

ok i looked at your profile. i would use a 91-93 because of small wiring changes in 94 that relocated the fuse blocks and changed a couple things.

things you would need:

engine cradle(i modded one but it would be much easier, i only modded it cause the damn thing wouldnt come out of the car)

engine and trans with harness and computer

a/c lines off the compressor(rest the same)

both heater core lines(yes including the big long one)

pass side heater hose(dr. side 3.1 hose can be cut to work)

91 3.4 hard fuel lines(about 5" long) off the fuel rails to hook up to your rubbers

3.4 exhaust down pipe(not made, must get used)

length(4') of vacuum hose to hook cruise module to engine

cruise control and throttle cables

3.4 dogbone - the bracket on the core support is the same just one needs removed and the other needs moved over, holes are already there

drove into the garage friday night with the 3.1, drove out wednesday morning(had to wait for ben to send me the fuel rail lines because i used a 91 engine which had screw on fittings and my car is a 94 with quick connects) with the 3.4

The 3.1 to 3.4 swap would be the easiest cause it was an option on your car unlike a swap to a 3.8L

Now whos cradle would have to be modifyed cauz it wouldnt come out???. :D

BTW, it was welded, ive got the weld part off and im going to redo the mount.

I will be doing the same also swapping my 3.1 to a 3.4 in my cutlass.

By june-july I should be running a 3.4. would it be best if igot an engine out of the same year cutlass??? or what

Posted

No, the year has nothing to do with it. My I would say go with a 1995 DOHC cause that was the best year. The 1996 and 1997's aren't chip-able and therefore not as good as the '95. Goodluck! 8)

I'm thinking about doing the swap, I've just heard too many horror stories about the 3.4 DOHC and it makes me uneasy. If I find a decent one at a good price I might go for it. Until then my 3.1 will have to do.

no, you want the 96/97 if possible. If you don't hook up the sensors that you dont' have plugs in your harness you don't need the later harness. Get a 91-93 wire harness with the 96/97 engine if possible. If not, try to get a 94/95 engine. If not still go for the 91-93. Computers are not a problem if you have an earlier computer and a later engine.

If you do the swap, build the engine up for more power while it's out of the car. 210hp after a swap doesn't seem like enough to me. Why do you have to get a used downpipe, patgizz? Couldn't you use those headers that just came out?

those headers are lame. theyre not worth the work because the primaries are nowhere near equal length and cant be much better than stock if any for the $$$ investment. not to mention the insane increase of engine compartment heat
