95CutlassVert
I have a '95 Cutlass convertible with the DOHC motor, and its quite a cool car, however I have been having a strange problem with the transmission. Sometimes, not all the time, doesn't seem to matter if hot or cold, the transmission upshifts prematurely. It will kick down if I gun it, but I try not to beat on it.......much. Also this is followed by very slow downshifts. I holds the higher gear on decelleration until the car shakes, but eventually does downshift and only once stalled. If I brake and move the shift to neutral, It will start out in the right gear, then it does the premature upshifts. I have only had the car about 2500 miles and the drivetrain seems to have been maintained reasonably well. It had about 115 K on the car. Any help will be much appreciated!! Baddflash
First, whats the tranny fluid look like, is it burnt? It could also have something wrong with electronics/valve body. I'd try a filter and fluid change first then see how it acts. Not related but any idea if the timing belt was replaced? You may want to check it out alot easier to fix now than after it breaks! 95CutlassVert
Thanks for the input, the fluid looks OK, not great, but not burnt either. No idea on the timing belt, but I'm gonna pull the cover and get an idea
cutsup1996
sounds dumb but once i had those symptoms too, it was old plugs and wires, phucker that sold me the car either lied on that one or they were just real crappy

Releasing the front dog-bone or modifing the firewall are the easiest. Did it my Cutlass DOHC back in the day, and made it a cake walk. Have a look: W-Body Performance - 1991 - 1995 DOHC Spark Plugs. - Erik

mfewtrail
Sounds like a TCC problem..there is TSB on 4T60-E's where the TCC solenoid gets grounded and can cause cars to "drop out of overdrive." The TCC solenoid is a fairly common problem, it's located in the side pan of the transaxle.
jamcneely
I agree with the last guy. The TCC is a common problem on 4T60-E tnasmissions. Many a time have I seen the exact same symptoms, along with some others such as the trans not being able to downshift, so it will stall at a stop light, because it is trying to start out in third or fourth when you go to pull away. The car will start again, but it will die while trying to start out again. I'll tell you if you ever want to piss a bunch of people off at once, drive a car doing that! It's happened to me before many times. In my own car, and in customer's cars on test drives. The only good thing about it happening in a customer's car is that you now know what the problem is. I haven't really seen anything that sets it off though, you know like trans temp or anything like that, they usually just do it when ever they feel like it. I will say this though, unless you are an experienced auto technician, I would leave it up to one to fix it.
