godofthunder Posted November 13, 2002 Report Posted November 13, 2002 HI all...I just wanted to know the indentification of my trans. I always hear of yall talking about 406tE or something like that. I have a 1996 Cutlass Supreme with the Auto with overdrive also, which wheel spins, the front right, front left, or both? Jon Quote
godofthunder Posted November 13, 2002 Author Report Posted November 13, 2002 Thats th one I would have? Which wheel spins? I smoked the tires today...and saw it coming from the drivers but I think I saw some from the passengers too. jon Quote
ismellrealbad Posted November 13, 2002 Report Posted November 13, 2002 Both can break loose, but typically one side does it easier than the other. sometimes both will break loose and one will catch faster than the other. I bet if you smoked your tires enough you were only spinning one wheel but there was enough smoke that it poured over to the other side and slightly crept up over there makin you think it was both. go back and check your lines to be sure. My 91 gp always seemed to break the driver side first. this is of course with the wheel straight Quote
godofthunder Posted November 13, 2002 Author Report Posted November 13, 2002 When you mean break you mean loose all tracktion and slip? In normal driving...whch tire is doing the work, the drivers side? Or both? Quote
ismellrealbad Posted November 13, 2002 Report Posted November 13, 2002 first question: yes 2nd question:both. lol if only one wheel is driving youve got a problem Quote
gpse3200 Posted November 14, 2002 Report Posted November 14, 2002 first question: yes 2nd question:both. lol if only one wheel is driving youve got a problem The way how the trans is made is that there is that the finaldrive is on the passenger side, with that ther's a center shaft the runs from the final to the driver's side linked tot he driver's side axle. The passenger side of the fianl is linked directly to the passenger side axle. This has nothing to do with any fluids, this is all mechanical. One other thing not to be confused with is the passenger side axle is longer than the driver's side axle but the passenger side doesn't have that longer shaft to contend with, so you may've lit up both sides but eventually it will be the passenger side that will spin longer because of the overall less mass on that side. Of course the steering wheel position plays a bigg part as well. The drivers side will light up on a hard left turn, but if you really want to see some smoke do it making a hard right turn. Not too heathly to power the axles at those angles but hey, they are built to last!. Under normal conditions though, you got both wheels with equal power. Quote
