Pogo420
ok so first it sounded like my water pump pulley was freak'n out and weep hole was leaking so replaced that, noise still there, coming from both sides of water pump, first i had the powersteering pump replaced, more noise gone, but some still there...AC compressor. Finally we figured out all three went bad at the same time pretty much. Well instead of replaceing the AC we jus rerouted the belt around it. (the AC didn't work right in first place and i for sure dont need it in chicago right now...) Does anyone know the power gains from this? its very noticeable horsepower, its only a 2.8 and i jus keep it running til its in the ground, but i'm still very curoius and don't have access to dyno
Justin
I'm thinking there won't be much difference for most people, since if the AC compressor is spinning freely, as in not engaged, there should be little to no drag. Your compressor was making noise even when it wasn't engaged, which means there was some major damage in there, maybe a bearing out or something. So I feel that if you had an AC system in a car that worked, and put that car on the dyno once with the belt on the AC compressor, and once with it bypassed, there would be little to no difference. Pogo420
i don't think your think'n bout this right, i'll take picture of it and post it in a few hours, but we put on a smaller belt and cut the belts travel down quite a bit, i figured it'd be similar to upgrading to the FFP underdrive pulley
joey b
I believe that these cars were available without AC? No? If so then it shouldn't be a problem at all.
Dannymik
So its possible to take off the A/C compressor and just put on a different belt? I brought this subject up a while ago and people were telling me I'd need a delete pulley (which would cost money) If I don't need a delete pulley then I might go ahead and tear out my non-functioning A/C to save a tiny bit of weigh (and more room in the engine bay ) lol...my a/c compressor is toast as well and I wouldn't mind deleting that POS! Those GM compressors are a headache that cost way too much to replace.
digitaloutsider
I completely bypassed the compressor on my GP. There was no W-Body without A/C. I just took the belt off of the compressor, crimped the slack, and the wonderful people at the local Napa found me a belt of the same size. So.. it can be done. Pogo420
Picture of my beltz new set up (its big!) sorry didn't have time to resize! (dont mide the date either, batteries go in and out of it) http://www.angelfire.com/il3/pogosplace/carz/Picture_080.jpg i plan on removing all that AC shit too, though i don't know if take'n weight off the drive wheels will be all that good of an idea as bad as they slip already!?!?! so Does anyone know the power gains of doing this?? or any good reasonable guesses? it feels very noticalbe huge difference from before! topless94style
5-10hp max would be my guess.
digitaloutsider
Okay okay Clarification: There was no Grand Prix without A/C There.
Dan94Z34
You guys are nutz. I love my A/C, and since its a 94 it has 134a in it. $10 for a can of freon instead of $70 for r12.

It's not that we don't like the A/C, it's the fact that the shitty compressor GM used is going out.
Pogo420
if it worked in the frist place I would of never known any of this, nuf said!

Same here, I love my a/c even if I only use it for about 3 months of the year. Usually the whole compressor does not go, just a bearing and the clutch/pully not a really expensive job, I have no idea what the labor would cost as I do all my own work, but the parts were only about 150$ well worth it for the a/c
