Dannymik
I'm looking to get this TGP off of DanTGP and would like any possible solutions to this problem he has had with it for over a year. It sounds like a real pain in the ass. "THere is a small electrical problem in the car involving starting it. I believe it has to do with some of the underhood wires as they have become very brittle leading to the starter. I replaced the starter but still the car will not start when it is hot out and the car is hot about 50% of the time unless I unplug the front fan by reaching under the car and unplugging and then it starts. about 10% of the time I just have to wait it out until the car decides to start. Probably a simple solution but Im a graduating college student and dont have the time to deal with learning GM electrical theory right now. He told me that the turbo causes such intense heat that these wires in that area are effected afterwhile and can cause problems. I don't understand the unplugging of the fan. It sounds like once the car cools down it will start fine :? . This could be related anywhere from the ignition switch to the starter. Its a red flag that I would like some help on. Thank you for any advice.
R Dubya
My 1st TGP has over 150k on it now and I've never really had electrical problems with it. I would start by cleaning the contacts on the starters power and grounds.
SleeperRed90TGp
I would say it’s your neutral start switch on top of the tranny. You can prove this by bridging the two large wires (like 10 ga) coming out of the switch. You can get to them buy taking the left front wheel off. Also check the alignment of the notches (takes a mirror cause the notches are inboard on the switch) and that the 3 bolts are tight. It’s a real PTA to replace this switch without removing the PMIII. If you do the bridge fix be aware the car will start in any gear. If you decide to do this and need more info let me know. I drove this way for a couple of years until the motor was out so I could replace the switch. Jud
no1kicker
Sorry to steal the thread, but my car used to start in neutral, and now it doesn't. Could the start switch be the cause?
Dannymik
from what DanTGP told me...it happens when its hot out or when the car has been up to temp for awhile :?
SleeperRed90TGp
Come to think of it mine wouldn't start in neutral either. The bolts on mine were loose from the trans rebuild. I might have been able to align it and tighten it down but I replaced it anyhow since I had the access. With the fan disconnected you get more amps through the switch. You might also start it using jumpers to another car which also gives it more amps. Did mine that way a few times. I knew your engine was hot at the time. Why else would the fan be running? Dannymik
thanks sleeper...I'm going to contact the current owner about this. He had his tranny rebuilt on it recently and I want to know if that problem occured after or before his tranny fix.
