dkorinko
Just wanted to know if anyone has noticed the difference between regular oil and a fully synthetic oil????
Guest TurboSedan
probably the only difference is engine and turbo life will be lengthened. Mobil 1 all the way. joshua
gp90se
turbo= 10w30 in winter and optional 10w40 in summer. -Jeff
dkorinko
I was just trying to see if anyone has noticed the car performing any different??? Not looking for extra horsepower here but i thought maybe the car would run smoother on synthetic oil???? Just a thought....
Guest Anonymous
I used Mobil 1 full synthetic once. The turbo seemed to spool alot faster. As for Castrol Syntec, it can suck my ass. I used it before the Mobil and within 30 miles driving I noticed a rod knock had developed. After switching it out for Mobil the knock almost went away. dkorinko
Less turbo spool time uh??? I would say we have very little as it is, our turbos are so small and then when u put the K&N filter on it helps, and since i am running open downpipe i think that helps even more, pretty soon i will have no spool time, at all. mfewtrail
my dad uses mobil 1 in the TGP..I use it in the GTP as well, I've heard people claim that their engines run a bit cooler and smoother with mobil 1 synthetic..since the oil has extended life, you can go longer without changing it(some people change it at 5K, I usually do mine anyway at 3500 or so, it still looks new when I change it..if that's a waste to change it early..oh well, I consider it preventative maintenance ) Also, I bet your TGP doesn't sound that great with open downpipe
gp90se
Okey, heres what Ive seen with synthetic after 2 1/2 years of workin at valvoline. On turbo cars, the oil comes out much cleaner at 3k then not, the turbos seem to last longer and run cooler. The big problem ive seen with ppl who switch is leaking, especially from the o-ring and intake leaks from w-bodys. if you have a low milage car, go for it. If you wanna switch over to synthetic, id either go at it by 1 quart at a time during an oilchange, next oilchange add 1 quart synthetic then the rest reg, next oilchange 2 quarts, and so on, just watch for leaks. also stay away from pennsoil and there related regular oils, they contain more wax then any other oil which burns off. -Jeff
gp90se
If I had a fresh turbo motor built, Id run 10w30 or straight 30 for the initial break-in (when running the motor at 2500rpms for 20 minutes (without the turbo hooked up if possible)), drain the oil and swap filters after making sure theres no real big particles in the filter, and use 10w30 regular oil for 5000 miles before switching to synthetic. Within that 5000 miles, id do 2 or 3 oil changes with 10w30 to make sure all the dirt possible out and the seals to seat properly. Ive heard of people doing it after the break-in, and people 500 miles after. But why risk not letting the valve seat right? Synthetic is good stuff if you start using it early in a motors life, it save a lot of wear and tear on a motor, keeps a motor from developing ticks, runs cooler, flows much better in the winter for cold startups, doesn't breakdown in the summer from heat, keeps a motor cleaner, etc etc. If your motor is properly built with good gaskets, you'll never have a problem with the engine from the oil. As far as intervals on when to change oil, regular oil id do every 1500-2000 miles, synthetic every 3000. You can go 7000+ miles on synthetic but you will have dirt in there from many things, so around 3000 is a good time 2 get all the junk out of there. -Jeff
gp90se
I was a tech there for 2 1/2 years, i trained the managers who currently run the place, I got fired for telling 1 of em what I though of him (35 year old single with 2 kids and not going anywhere in life quickly in a low respecting job). Technically, I was fired for insubordination the clock struck 6 which is closing time, I politely told the customer we were closed, the manager said we should have taken em, next day the regional manager said I have a poor attitude (which I have had since day 1, but never to a customer), I was insubordinate and sum other crap. I told em how much bullshit the company had put me thru and why my attitude was how it was. I was terminated and given a notice saying I can have my job back in 6 months if my attitude has changed. While I was there, I did everything from transmission services, oil changed, radiator flushes with and without a machine, gear boxes, transfer cases, fuel filters (gas and diesel), top end cleaning, and AC recharging (without a license). I was offered an assistance manager position over the summer, I told em I dont want to deal with the paperwork and responsibility. In all, Henley Enterprizes (owner of this branch of valvoline instant oilchange) the company lies and cheats about everything and is sadly run. Im going into the computer biz. -Jeff

Marcus18
I have 145000 miles on my car it has a slight knock if it's been sitting for a day but clears up once warmed up. is it alright to put synthetic in mine? marcus
dkorinko
I'd say yes but if u are afraid of it then u can do what someone already suggested, each oil change use 1 quart of syntheitc, and the next time two, and so on and so on until u are using 100% synthetic. gp90se
I wouldnt go near synthetic with 145k miles, next oil change you might want to try lucas oil additive. What that does is stick to everywhere in the engine that needs to be lubed, so after it sits for a day, there will still be some lubrication throughout the motor. -Jeff
mfewtrail
Also, I bet your TGP doesn't sound that great with open downpipe Why would u think that????? because anything and everything I've heard with open downpipe sounds like pure shit other than at idle...I ran my volvo like that for a while to take advantage of the quicker spool-up of the turbo and just to be loud ..but my car had a T3 and actually took a bit of time to spool on my small 4cyl..the TGP's on the otherhand has a decent sized V6 and a small ass turbo = basically no time til full boost. Anyways, everything sounds better running through at least some piping/muffler combo..a high flowing catback will suffice, hell you see people running 10's w/ catbacks on turbo cars(supras to name one)...a 2.5'' exhaust on a TGP would suffice..3'' would be ok as wel, as it would accomodate a larger turbo and future upgrades nicely. dkorinko
Yeah I mean, I guess different people just like different things. Sometimes yes, it does get annoying. I am going to try and make it a little bit quieter, I dont like it when people can wake up with me coming down the street at 2:00 in the morning, gives me a bad name! It does leak but I would rather have to catch a small leak with cardboard and run a superior oil. I had also thought about using Lucas Oil Additive on my car but once I saw this, it made me ask questions. http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/images/lucas/lucas.htm The first half is gear oil but the second half is motor oil.
