Blaze420
I was wondering about how much hp could I get off of removing the catalyc converter off of my 90' Chevy Lumina Euro 3.1L?(I know it's illegal by the way.)
Maverick
I got the cat removed on mine, and it sounds sexy. I would assume no more than a 5hp boost
stlunatics2oo3
yeah i would say maybe 5hp to maybe 8 hp but not to much of a gain
dbtk2
I gained over 2 tenths of a second in the 1/4 mile by removing my BRAND NEW (about 1 week old) catalytic convertor. If your catalytic converter is as old as your car, I would imagine you could gain 5-10hp. I gained so much because my car is a turbo, but it will still help you some even though you are N/A. Blaze420
Well, my cat. converter is the same age as my 90' Lumina with 160K mi. on it so I should expect a small gain.
mfewtrail
yeah, I'd say a few ponies(maybe 5 if you're lucky) are gained from removing the catalytic converter...btw, where in TN are you(just wondering)?
Guest TurboSedan
i definately noticed an acceleration gain when i removed my cat. altho, it had a little over 200,xxx miles when i removed it and the cat was starting to stink. sounds alot better too! i had a local exhaust shop remove it and weld in a straight section of pipe for around $60 i think. joshua
Blaze420
I'm in Polk County
dkorinko
If your cat is BOLTED on, i would take it off, and just pound all the filter shit out of it with a screwdriver and hammer...its the same thing as having no cat. And if its welded on i would cut it off and just get a piece of pipe welded in there, either way u will get the same results. Good luck. dkorinko
Yeah make sure u get a few feet of pipe to maybe dump it near the rear tire or maybe by the door. I need to move mine because right now it dumps where the cat is and smoke actually comes into the car.
slick
Why not keep it legal and get a high flow cat?
Guest TurboSedan
cuz they are expensive i'm not sure if it's even illegal here (probably), but i don't have any emission testing anyway. joshua
Blaze420
Does a high flow cat. give the same HP gain as having no cat.?
dkorinko
You will probably get almost the same results, gutting ur cat or taking it off all together is just a hell of a lot cheaper then getting a high flow cat.
slick
Yeah, a high flow cat is about $70, but it is legal, and probably the same results as no cat at all.
dbtk2
Why not keep it legal and get a high flow cat? Â Read the following and you will see my opinion on that matter. Â Does a high flow cat. give the same HP gain as having no cat.? Â Ummm....NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Â I found that out the hard way on my TGP. The cat was plugged so we bought a high flow cat (along with some new mufflers) and had an exhaust shop put them on. The car ran much better than with the plugged cat, but didn't run that great. So then we cut out the cat and replaced it with straight pipe and gained 2 tenths of a second in the 1/4. (that is what I was talking about above) At this point the high-flow cat on the car was only 2 weeks old AT MOST.
dkorinko
Thats why everyone should just do what did...Chop it off before the cat and and just dump it to the side...but if u dont have a turbo, u need the back pressure, so atleast try and run ur exhaust through something! Blaze420
So if my car has no forced induction then it would be better to leave the cat. on instead of chopping it off?
dkorinko
Yeah if u have a muffler then u will have plenty of back pressure. And i really dont think open downpipe sounds like ass. Its great being able to hear the turbo wind down and i enjoy the loudness and there is even less turbo spool time! Ok ok, it does get annoying when u are trying to carry on a convo with ur grandma but otherwise, i love it!
93GTP
Yeah, a high flow cat is about $70, but it is legal, and probably the same results as no cat at all. Â Has no one on here heard of ebay? Â You can get Carsound High Flow cats on ebay for ~$30 dollars. IMO that's definetely cheap enough to warrant putting on a high flow versus no cat at all. You'll be all legal, and helping the environment. Â http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=33629&item=2431968694 Â That's a 3 inch though, so you'd need to get a smaller 2.5" one from them. Blaze420
I was thinknig about getting one from ebay, but I am going to ride around with no cat. 1st and sometime later I will buy one from ebay and try it out.
dkorinko
Has anyone had to pass emissions with the high flow cats on ebay???? Just wondering if u actually passed or not.
dkorinko
Yeah I had to go through it awhile ago (obviously before i was running open downpipe) and I passed fine, that was with a high flow cat and performance mufflers... dbtk2
I have seen people pass emissions with no cat, so I don't think not having a cat is a problem if your engine is running properly. We don't have emissions here in Michigan, so I don't care, but I know of a few GTP owners that have passed emissions with headers and no cat. (They told the emissions people that their resonator was an aftermarket cat)
