Robby1870
The flywheels for the auto and 5spd are different, but Im pretty sure the same starter can be used (meaning the teeth are the same).
TurboZ24
I actually use a 3100 starter off a 97' Malibu. It's a gear reduction unit. I got tired of the huge, old style starters dying every couple of months, so I swapped to this one. It's been on there for years, starts like a champ. You also have more room for hoses, etc around the starter, since it's quite a bit smaller.
TGPilot
I used the original TGP starter when I swapped the 5-speed. Didn't have any issues with shimming or mounting... 8)
TurboZ24
The Malibu 3100 starter is a direct replacement. You don't even have to do anything with the cables or anything. It bolts right up.
Chris A
Any newer 3x00 starter will work for that matter. Quite a bit lighter and quieter! I thought about it if I ever had old school die, but never did?!
Guest TurboSedan
i reused the starter from my 3.1/auto combo when i swapped in my Getrag 282. that one died a few months later so i bought one for a '90 Grand Prix 3.1/5-speed and i'm still using that. next one will definately be from a 3100/3400. good info thanks joshua
