bad93lumi
FOR A FEW WEEKS NOW, MY CAR HAS BEEN MAKING A STRANGE KNOCKING NOISE IN THE BACK END WHEN I GO OVER LARGE BUMPS. I LOOKED AT IT MYSELF AND TOOK IT TO A SHOP AND I CANT FIGURE IT OUT. IF ANYONE KNOWS, DROP ME A LINE
5speedz34
First thing please don't type in Caps. If it as clunk it could be the rear strut mounts the tend to make a clunk. But a knock could be something on the mono-leaf assembly.
Slade901
A failing shock absorber or it might be coming from the shock absorber mounts.

Mizouse
I had a similar problem with my Cutlass. I had new tires put on it and when they jacked it up, they pushed the drivers side rear strut right through the strut mount. Needless to say, whenever I hit a bump on that side it would make the most god awful knocking noise because the top of the strut was banging agains the bottom of the rear decklid. The tire place paid for that one. I also have a weird squeaking noise that comes from the rear, passenger side from time to time. Not sure what its doing exactly, but I shoot some WD40 on the top of the strut mount and up under it inside the wheel well and it goes away. Haven't noticed it in a few months now that I think about it.
supreme_style21
I'm gonna join the crowd and say I've had the same thing. It was more of a loud knock than a clunk and only happened when I was stopping. It wasn't with the brakes either. Although it sounded to be a bad problem, 4 shops found nothing and the noise went away.. hasn't returned yet :?

5speedz34
My friends Cutlass' has sounds like that from the mounts, mine used to do it till I got new mounts, but now over big bumps and when its cold out it does it bigtime! topless94style
I never have a problem when its warm out. Now that its cold, i get that annoying squeeking sound. I hope its the leaf spring pads and not the strut mounts coming through. That happened on my front end when i tool the front stb off for a day. Boy, that was bad squeeking noise, an hrs worth of work to get them back, and a bent hood. I learned my lesson.
J
how hard is it to change the rear strut mounts yourself? I hear they don't cost too much and I'd like to do it myself. Also do I have to put in new struts? I don't really have cash for that and its just the clunking that is annoying anyways. see if Michael will just sell the billet mounts that come with the coilover kit, maybe that'll help. i still get a pop when i go up a steep drive way slowly but no more squeeks or rattles (from the rear end at least)later Jay
