Black Betty
is it true that the 3500 durability is better than the 3400 especially the piston slap issue that would arise in the 3400
Pontiac6KSTEAWD
Yes... leaps and bounds better than the 3400.. However, its not a direct swap. But it is doable if you have mechanical know how, and can read the swap guide provided by Milzy Motorsports. https://www.milzymotorsports.com/3500-swap/ I was contemplating doing this swap on my 2001 Pontiac Aztek if the Head Gasket blew, or the engine blew. It never died, and is still running today. Now that I sold it, I aint worried about it at all! Vegeta
Leaps and bounds? nah. Unless you are boosting it, not really. They were good to swap when they were low mile, but the work involved for an NA build to be swapped in isn't something I justify myself. Piston slap maybe, though that is not a durability issue. We race both, and both generally hold up about the same. Add a turbo to the discussion, and you gotta modify the 3400 to handle the power the 3500 does stock, though at some point its easier to modify the 3400. Make sure you read the policies on anything MMS considers custom.
