quakerj Posted September 19, 2022 Report Posted September 19, 2022 Can the starter on a 1996 3.1L Grand Prix be swapped to one of the newer style PMGR starters, say off a 1997 Lumina 3.1L? Seems I have an old school starter on mine with the giant windings (and weight to match)-- but I notice 1997+ W-bodies (maybe others) have a much smaller PMGR starter... Rockauto seems to verify this. Are these interchangeable? AFAIK the engine hadn't changed any from a 1996 GP to a 1997 Lumina 3.1L for example. Quote
carkhz316 Posted September 19, 2022 Report Posted September 19, 2022 Yes they can. As long as its a 60* v6, they should fit. I installed a starter from a mid 2000s Equinox (listed fitment; was used) on my '92 Lumina Z34 I used to own. Bolted right up and of course took up half the space of the old DD unit. Quote
Schurkey Posted September 19, 2022 Report Posted September 19, 2022 I put the newer PMGR starter on my '92 3.4L. Totally interchangeable so far as I know. Of course, you have to get the correct PMGR starter--not one for a 5.7L V8, for example. Quote
pwmin Posted September 22, 2022 Report Posted September 22, 2022 I just installed one in my 95 Monte 3 4. New AC Delco part number 337-1030. About $120 on Amazon. carkhz316 1 Quote
