redneckguy
i am about to do a performance 3.1 liter engine and was wondering what heads to choose. i want to get peak performance out of it and was wondering if i should go with a cast iron head or a set of gen 3 aluminum heads? any help appriciated
cutsup1996
definitely the gen 3's, they breathe better, lighter weight, dissipate heat faster, unless you plan on getting every single horsepower with nitrous or a strong ass turbo or supercharger
redneckguy
i do plan on using nos but only a 50 hp shot would the gen III's still work
phantomFE3
dont waste your money, buy a SBC and put it in something other than a w-body if you want to go fast, but other than that, get the gen III heads
93GrandPRIX
Aluminum is much better. Like the first guy said it's lighter. If I had that kind of money I'd buy them for my 3.1L V6 1993 Grand Prix SE. Where are you buying them from?
Brian P
How come the people replying to this guys post not have a clue? I havent heard 1 correct statement yet except for gen 3 flows better. Why wouldnt gen 2 heads take boost/N2O? Why do you want aluminum heads on your '93 3.1? You HAVE THEM. :!:

Robby1870
Redneckguy, your question needs more detail. What kind of power do you want, n/a, boosted, N20?? Those all play a huge factor in deciding what to use. Oh, TGP heads aren't "strengthened"or anything. Maybe this will get this thread headed in a direction away from the useless pile
redneckguy
well i want to run a mild shot of nos. i'm going to put a mild race cam in it and i am undecided whether or not to run solid lifters with roller rockers. can anyone advise me on what will get big power. money isn't really an issue. i want the highest amount of power out of a 3.1 i can get. i don't want a turbo though i'd rather stay away from them. tgpguy21
Its not worth putting all this money into a 3.1 when you could just buy a 3.4 dohc and run faster times with that then you could with a moded 3.1.If money isnt a problem get a 3.4 and mod that thing out. :guns: :fruity:
Robby1870
Alright, since no one wants to help this guy.........I'll throw in some stuff Dont go with solid lifters, they dont make a cam for solid lifters and besides, you really dont need them. If you go with a roller valvetrain you have to use the Gen III heads with notches in them for the roller rockers. Gen III heads flow much better, but its not as simple as throwing them on a Gen II block, you need all the stuff from a 3100 from the heads up, even the power steering pump. As for cams, there are plenty out there. You might try raising compression with some aftermarket pistons. And a good port/polish job on heads and intakes, and headers a nice addition to a modded 3.1L HTH
Vegeta
crower makes solid lifters and cams meant for them. A modded 3.1 can run with a stock 3.4 DOHC but its gonna take some intelligence and money. Easier to start with a 3400 though.

redneckguy
well i would get the 3.4dohc but i want to keep it fairly simple. I don't want the dohc mostly because of the timing belt design. i'm not bad mouthing it at all, i just don't like the design. As for the 3.1 would an aluminum block be at any advantedge? and are the roller hydraulic lifters any good?
Robby1870
the aluminum block that is offered is like 40-50lbs lighter than than stock, block but its not any stronger, so no, I dont think its work the $$$$ for it. If you use the roller lifters, you have to use a roller cam from a 3100 and Comp Cams is working on a performance roller cam, but thats the only completely new roller cam out there. You can get regrinds done, but as of now, 3.1L is the only one that has completely new cams available
