pshojo
I remember seeing some previous conversations about putting in newer style HUD in our Gen1's. THought a re-pin was required. I picked up an Aztek HUD to install in my 95. I'm thinking about swapping the components within the housing, but not sure on the wiring swap? digitaloutsider
The Aztek and Rendezvous HUDs both rely on serial data in order to read the speed. I know jack about OBD 1.5, so I'm not sure if it would support it. You could give it power and connect the data wire to the corresponding pin in the ALDL to see if it works. The plugs are nothing alike and it would need to be repinned.
Imp558
Ain't happening without class II data from the PCM. If you do OBD-II you should be good.
pshojo
How about switching the screens LED from Aztek to the 96 GP? Thoughts?
Imp558
IIRC a 1996 HUD is still uart data, as is the DIC. I could be wrong, have to look at the prints.
ManicMechanic
I think Taylor used the Aztek HUD in one of his GPs. EDIT: No, it was for his Cutlass and it didn't work because the Aztek gets the info from the BCM rather than the PCM. Imp558
You can run a Bonnie HUD, an earlyish one, and they're a bit smaller.
pshojo
Do they have red LED?
Imp558
No, green. If you were OBD-II there would be a lot of aftermarket options too.
pshojo
Isn’t 1996 OBD2? What would keep me from switching LED screens? Anyone into electrical ?
digitaloutsider
I'm no electrical engineer, but the screen in the newer HUDs is a dot matrix LCD, the old one is an old school VFD display. You would need some way to drive that new screen because the other board won't support it.
