cold air intake on turbo pointless?

I'm asking because I think colder is better but on a dsm board they say it's pointless. I felt a difference when I moved my filter. also jeff sells cold air intake. so what the big deal?

I guess I don't understand how anyone could say that a CAI would be pointless. The cooler the inlet air the better, especially on a turbo car. When the turbo compresses the air it will generate heat no matter if a CAI is in place or not. With a CAI you are not ingesting the heat from the engine compartment thus having cooler more dense air going to the turbo to be compressed. If you do not use a CAI you are ingesting hot less dense air that gets even hotter when it is compressed. Even with an intercooler hot compressed air to your turbo is not as effecient... 8)

ps...do you have a link to the thread you are speaking about?

Wow.. it is? Boy.. those DSM'ers know everything.

I've got the K&N directly behind the intercooler, so it's almost always pulling in cool air. The car pulls VERY hard now that it's cooled off. It scared the shit out of me the other day when I got on it, as I know it never pulled that hard when it was warmer outside!

just tell me you would get teh same power if you were sucking off of the exhuast manifold vs. nice cold air

Could not have said it any clearer! Just because a factory does not install the CAI on their model car does not mean it is not an effective and a highly sought after performance mod for any car turbo or otherwise. The TGP has a CAI from the factory. Poorly designed...but it is there! 8)

Some may think it's pointless on an intercooled car. The intercooler will lower the intake charge much more than a CAI would. If the intercooler is very effiecient, CAI may not be worth the trouble.

I would say the CAI would be good on a 3.1 Turbo engine. The stock intercooler sucks and it suffers from heat soak in traffic.
