i was under the assumption that both trannys were 3.61 final drive.... anyone know something different?

the only cars that got a getrag with different gearing were the 93-94 olds achieva SCX with the HO quad4 w41 option (190HP) i hear they got a 3.91 final drive getrag.

You would see minimal difference between the 284 and 282 if the 1-5 gear ratios are the same. As for power I have seen Beretta guys put a l67 behind a 282 and they havn't flown apart yet.

A manual transmission puts more power to the ground period. an auto has a loss of like 20% horse power and a manual is like 15%. dont quote me on that though. Plus you have more gears and can control the power band yourself.

IF you had 2.14 gears like I had in my cutlass, then put 3.73 posi in it, you would notice a difference :).

You might only notice a small perf difference between a 282 and 284, but the 282 is still less then ideal. An upshift into 2nd drops the rpm's to at or below 4k and 5th gear is way too short.

As for the 282 being bullet proof, it isn't. All those cars that have a v8 or l67 behind them are much much lighter then a w-body. You might be able to get away with it in a w-body but it is still a question of when, not if the thing breaks. I also have heard that the 282 doesn't like to shift above 6k or so.

The 282 weighs 100lbs, the 284 150lbs. There is a reason for this. I will agree that the 282 is better then an auto but if you have the DOHC I would hightly suggest making the effort to find a 284.

Then there is the clutch, a stock 282 or even a fairly mild performance clutch will not do. You'd probably need to buy a 9 11/16" pressure plate and a performance disc.

I won't say the 282 isn't worth it or bad, but the 284 is definately a better choice if you have the DOHC.

Since you put it that way I agree :). The 284 is geared better to handle the high power band of the DOHC. I wish my 94 z34 had a 5-speed :(. My pervious car was a 92 beretta, and it had the hm-282 in it :D . You are right when you get to about 5800 rpm's mine didn't like to shift very well either.

The quad 4s shifted at 7400 RPM, so I hope those 282s dont mind. Curtis shifts at 8000, but he has trouble with high speed I believe. I dont recall exactly...over 155 mph kills them or something like that.
